The Delhi Government has approved proposals to shift and underground high tension (HT) and low tension (LT) power lines in several assembly constituencies of the capital. The decision is being seen as a major step toward enhancing public safety, strengthening the power distribution system, and improving urban aesthetics.
Energy Minister Ashish Sood stated that the primary objective of the decision is to remove unsafe overhead power lines passing through densely populated residential areas. These lines have long posed serious safety risks, and undergrounding them will significantly reduce the chances of accidents while ensuring a more reliable power supply.
According to the government, projects worth nearly ₹463 crore have already been approved under this initiative. Out of this, undergrounding work in 125 localities is estimated to cost around ₹267.20 crore. Additionally, 26 roads and stretches in the Chandni Chowk area will undergo similar work at an estimated cost of ₹159.47 crore.
As part of pilot projects, undergrounding of overhead wires has already been successfully completed in BH Block, Shalimar Bagh, and C-4 East Block, Janakpuri. The positive outcomes of these projects have encouraged the government to replicate the model in other parts of the city.
The decision, taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aims to prioritize citizen safety while modernizing Delhi’s power infrastructure. Officials believe that underground power lines will not only reduce accidents but also contribute to a cleaner and more organized urban landscape.
The energy department noted that in 2025, approvals worth ₹37.63 crore were granted for 15 proposals related to undergrounding overhead lines. Furthermore, under the Government of India’s SASCI Scheme, around ₹109 crore has been approved for 13 proposals involving the shifting of HT and LT lines. These measures are expected to significantly reduce power-related accidents in high-density areas.
The energy minister emphasized that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of the Chief Minister, the government remains committed to developing Delhi as a safe, modern, and energy-smart city. Ensuring a secure and dependable power supply remains a top priority.
He also revealed that a comprehensive power system master plan for Delhi has been prepared with a horizon up to 2030. Under this roadmap, capital investment of nearly ₹17,000 crore will be made over the next three years through Delhi Transco Limited and power distribution companies. The plan focuses on upgrading existing grids, installing new grids, and meeting rising electricity demand, including requirements driven by electric vehicles.
The government clarified that this initiative goes beyond mere relocation of power lines. It represents a broader commitment to citizen safety, modern infrastructure, and sustainable urban development. Once implemented fully, the projects are expected to make Delhi’s power system safer, more resilient, and better equipped to meet future challenges.
