Ernst & Young (EY) India is facing scrutiny following a viral letter from a woman alleging that her 26-year-old daughter, Anna Sebastian, died due to overwork just four months after joining the company. The letter, which circulated widely on social media, claims that Anna passed away on July 20, 2024, and that no representative from EY attended her funeral.
In response to the allegations, EY expressed deep sorrow over Anna Sebastian’s untimely death. The firm extended its condolences to the bereaved family and stated that it is providing assistance and support during this difficult time. EY emphasized its commitment to improving workplace conditions and ensuring a healthy environment for its employees.
“We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian’s tragic and untimely passing and offer our sincerest condolences to her family,” said an EY spokesperson. “We are providing all necessary assistance to the family and are committed to enhancing the work environment for our employees. While no measure can make up for their loss, we are dedicated to supporting them and improving our workplace.”
The letter highlighted that Anna, who had joined EY Pune on March 19, 2024, was excited about her first job at a prestigious firm. She had recently cleared her chartered accountancy exams and was enthusiastic about her career. Her mother’s letter criticized the company for its lack of support and presence during her daughter’s final moments.
EY assured that it takes such concerns seriously and will continue to prioritize the well-being of its employees. The firm acknowledged the need for continuous improvement in providing a supportive work environment for its workforce across India.
