Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh has emphasized that the federation will exclusively determine the wrestlers representing India at the 2024 Paris Games, dismissing any involvement from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Sanjay Singh stated that fresh trials will be conducted to finalize the squad for the prestigious event.
“Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will decide which wrestler will participate in the Paris Olympics, not IOA, and there will be fresh trials as well,” said WFI president Sanjay Singh in a statement to IANS.
Previous reports suggested that IOA would have the ultimate say on wrestler selection, but WFI clarified that they have the necessary recognition from the United World Wrestling (UWW), giving them the authority to pick the team.
“In the recently concluded World Qualifiers in Istanbul, which was the final Paris Olympics qualifying event for wrestlers, Aman Sehrawat and Nisha Dahiya took India’s number of quotas to six in wrestling,” the statement added.
India’s journey to securing Olympic quotas included notable achievements by wrestlers such as Antim Panghal, Vinesh Phogat, Anshu Malik, and Reetika Hooda in various qualifying events.
