Gautam Budh Nagar, December 20, 2025:
Large parts of Uttar Pradesh remain under the grip of intense cold and fog, with weather authorities issuing a yellow alert for dense fog in 42 districts, including Gautam Budh Nagar. Officials have warned residents to remain cautious over the next few days, even as a change in wind pattern is expected to bring gradual relief from dense fog conditions.
Acting on the directions of Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Atul Kumar, District Disaster Expert Omkar Chaturvedi said that most regions of the state are currently experiencing cold weather accompanied by persistent fog. According to the Meteorological Department, a significant change in weather conditions is likely from Monday, when western (pashchim) winds are expected to begin blowing across the state.
Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh from the Meteorological Centre, Lucknow, stated that slow western winds will start affecting Uttar Pradesh from Monday, with wind speed gradually increasing. He explained that while the change in wind direction will lead to a further drop in day and night temperatures, it is also expected to reduce the intensity of fog across the state over time. However, until conditions improve, dense fog may continue to disrupt normal life, especially during early morning and late night hours.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in 42 districts, advising people to take necessary precautions, particularly while travelling. Reduced visibility on highways and city roads has increased the risk of accidents, prompting authorities to urge motorists to remain vigilant.
Alongside the weather alert, the district administration has also issued public advisories on winter safety, focusing on health, fire safety and road safety during foggy conditions.
Residents have been advised to wear warm clothing, including multiple layers, caps, mufflers and socks, to protect themselves from cold-related illnesses. Officials have recommended consuming hot food and beverages, such as soup, warm water and herbal tea, to maintain body warmth. People have also been encouraged to sit in mild morning sunlight, which helps boost Vitamin D levels and immunity. Special care has been advised for elderly people and children, ensuring they are adequately protected from cold exposure.
At the same time, authorities have cautioned against common winter-related risks. People have been advised not to wear light clothing, as exposure can lead to cold-related ailments affecting the head, ears and feet. Consumption of cold water or cold food items should be avoided, as it may worsen cough and cold symptoms. The use of heaters or coal fires in closed rooms has been strictly discouraged due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Officials also stressed that people should not reduce water intake during winter, as proper hydration remains essential even in cold weather.
With the increased use of bonfires (alav) to keep warm, the administration has issued specific fire safety guidelines. Bonfires should be lit only in open and well-ventilated areas to prevent smoke accumulation. Dry wood should be used, and plastic or garbage must not be burned. A safe distance should be maintained around bonfires, particularly to protect children and elderly people. Keeping water or sand nearby has been advised to control flames in case of emergency.
People have also been warned not to light bonfires in crowded or enclosed spaces, and to keep flammable materials such as petrol, diesel or sprays away from fire. Drying clothes too close to flames has been discouraged due to fire risk. Bonfires should never be left unattended and must be fully extinguished before leaving the area.
Given the persistent fog, the administration has emphasised road safety measures. Drivers have been advised to reduce speed, use low-beam headlights or fog lights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Unnecessary lane changes and overtaking should be avoided. Proper use of indicators and horns at intersections and turns has been stressed, and motorists have been advised to stop at safe locations if visibility becomes extremely poor.
Health officials have also highlighted the importance of maintaining strong immunity during winter. Citizens have been advised to follow a balanced and nutritious diet, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, amla, ginger, garlic, turmeric and protein-rich foods. Regular light exercise, yoga and daily exposure to sunlight have been recommended to improve immunity. Adequate sleep of 7–8 hours and stress management have been stressed as key factors in maintaining overall health. Maintaining hygiene, drinking warm fluids and consuming herbal decoctions or soups have also been advised to prevent infections.
The district administration has appealed to citizens to strictly follow the advisories and remain alert during the ongoing cold and foggy spell. The information was shared by the Information Department, Gautam Budh Nagar.
