New Delhi | March 17, 2026 — In a significant push toward inclusive urban infrastructure, Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has written to Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, urging the installation of audible traffic signals across the capital.
The proposal aims to enhance road safety and accessibility for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens, particularly those with visual impairments.
Concern Over Safety of Vulnerable Pedestrians
In his letter, the Speaker highlighted the daily challenges faced by visually impaired individuals and elderly citizens while navigating busy intersections.
Citing data from the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, he noted that nearly 60 lakh people in Delhi suffer from vision-related issues, including 12 to 18 lakh individuals with significant low vision, many of whom are senior citizens.
He emphasized that existing traffic systems, which rely heavily on visual signals, are inadequate for such individuals and pose serious risks to their safety.
Call for Audible Traffic Systems
Shri Gupta proposed the installation of sound-based traffic signals, such as beeps or ticking sounds, at major intersections to assist pedestrians in identifying safe crossing times.
He pointed out that several countries including Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Sweden, Brazil, and Australia have successfully implemented such systems to improve pedestrian accessibility.
He also referenced Japan’s use of melodic or bird-like sounds, which make it easier for visually impaired pedestrians to navigate crossings safely.
Toward an Inclusive Smart City
The Speaker stressed that introducing audible signals is not merely a technological upgrade but a step toward ensuring dignity, safety, and equal access for all citizens.
He stated that such measures can significantly reduce road accidents and help transform Delhi into a truly inclusive and citizen-friendly smart city.
Request for Early Implementation
Shri Vijender Gupta has requested the Lieutenant Governor to examine the proposal and expedite its implementation on a priority basis, ensuring safer and more accessible roads for all sections of society.
