27 March 2026, New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Noida International Airport at Jewar, a landmark infrastructure project aimed at transforming air connectivity in the Delhi-NCR region. Developed at an estimated cost of over ₹11,200 crore in its first phase, the greenfield airport is expected to significantly ease congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport while strengthening India’s aviation network and economic capacity.

Major Infrastructure Boost for Delhi-NCR

The Noida International Airport represents a significant step forward in India’s infrastructure expansion, particularly in the aviation sector. Strategically located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, the airport is designed to function as a second major aviation hub for the National Capital Region. With rising passenger demand and operational pressure on Delhi’s existing airport, the new facility is expected to distribute air traffic more efficiently and provide airlines with improved operational flexibility.

The first phase of the airport has been planned to handle approximately 1.2 crore passengers annually, with long-term expansion plans aiming to increase capacity to nearly 7 crore passengers. This scale of development positions the airport among the most ambitious aviation projects in India. The project is also expected to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure, potentially making it one of the few states with multiple international airports.

Economic Growth, Jobs and Farmer Benefits

Beyond improving passenger travel, the airport is expected to act as a key economic driver for the region. Its large cargo handling capabilities will enable faster movement of goods, supporting industries and boosting trade efficiency. The development is particularly beneficial for farmers, who will gain access to international markets for exporting perishable products such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products and flowers.

Improved logistics infrastructure, including cold storage and warehousing, is expected to reduce wastage and improve pricing for agricultural produce. Estimates suggest that farmers’ incomes could increase significantly due to better market access and reduced dependence on intermediaries. In addition, the project is expected to generate employment across sectors such as aviation, logistics, retail and hospitality, creating new economic opportunities for the region.

Advanced Infrastructure and Connectivity

The airport has been designed as a modern and future-ready facility equipped with advanced infrastructure and technology. It features a 3,900-metre runway capable of supporting large aircraft and enabling round-the-clock operations under various weather conditions. The project also incorporates a multi-modal connectivity system integrating road, rail and metro networks to ensure seamless passenger movement.

Connectivity through the Yamuna Expressway and proposed metro links is expected to enhance accessibility for travellers. Experts have also emphasised the need for direct metro connectivity between the new airport and Delhi’s existing airport to further improve passenger convenience, especially for international transit travellers.

Security arrangements for the inauguration were extensive, including multi-layered deployment of personnel, advanced surveillance systems and anti-drone measures. The airport also incorporates sustainability features such as a net-zero emission design, reflecting a focus on environmentally responsible infrastructure development.

Large-Scale Event and Public Participation

The inauguration event witnessed significant public and official participation, reflecting the importance of the project. Senior government officials, ministers and local leaders attended the ceremony, while large crowds gathered to witness the historic moment. The Prime Minister visited key facilities, including the terminal and cargo areas, before formally dedicating the airport to the nation.

Traffic arrangements and security measures were put in place across the region to manage the large influx of visitors. The scale of the event highlighted the project’s importance not only as an infrastructure development but also as a symbol of India’s growth trajectory.

Vision of a Global Aviation Hub

The Noida International Airport is envisioned as a long-term aviation hub that could become one of the largest in Asia once fully developed. Future phases include multiple runways, expanded passenger capacity and the development of a comprehensive aviation ecosystem, including logistics hubs, maintenance facilities and commercial zones.

This integrated development model is expected to attract global airlines and investors, strengthening India’s position in international aviation and trade. The airport’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity, boosting exports and supporting sustained economic growth.

The inauguration of the Noida International Airport at Jewar marks a transformative step in India’s infrastructure journey. With its focus on connectivity, economic expansion and sustainability, the project is set to redefine the aviation landscape of Delhi-NCR and contribute significantly to India’s ambition of becoming a global logistics and aviation hub.
