In a heart-wrenching accident that shook residents of Noida and Ghaziabad, two people lost their lives and fourteen others were injured after a mini pick-up truck carrying around sixteen passengers rammed into a divider on the New Hindon Flyover on Sunday evening. The tragic incident occurred around 5:30 pm when the vehicle, returning from an idol immersion ceremony, veered out of control at a sharp turn and crashed into the central divider, throwing nearly ten passengers off the 15-foot-high flyover. The victims, all residents of Sarfabad village, were part of a community group that had gathered for the immersion ritual at the Hindon in Ghaziabad earlier that day.

The accident and emergency response

According to police officials, the accident took place when the mini truck was heading towards Sarfabad in Noida Sector 113 from the Hindon side of Ghaziabad. The vehicle, reportedly carrying sixteen men, lost balance at a left curve on the New Hindon Flyover. The driver, unable to maintain control, crashed the vehicle into the divider. The impact was so severe that ten of the passengers sitting at the back were flung off the flyover, falling onto the ground below from a height of around fifteen feet. Those who remained on the flyover suffered serious injuries due to the collision.

The police were alerted immediately through the emergency helpline number 112. A team from Sector 113 police station, led by senior officers, rushed to the scene to rescue the victims. Bystanders and local residents also joined the effort to help the injured before ambulances arrived. The injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among the victims, one was declared dead on arrival, while another was reported to be in a critical condition. Despite receiving medical attention, the second victim succumbed to his injuries after several hours of treatment, bringing the death toll to two.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Noida, Twinkle Jain, confirmed the sequence of events and shared details of the victims. The deceased were identified as Ranjeet, aged 55, and Vasudev, aged 42, both residents of Sarfabad village. According to ACP Jain, Vasudev, who was initially reported as critical, could not survive despite continuous medical efforts. The officer also noted that the driver of the mini truck had sustained injuries and was under observation. It was yet to be confirmed whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, with injured passengers crying for help and debris scattered across the flyover. Several vehicles stopped to assist, creating a traffic jam on the route connecting Ghaziabad and Noida. The police personnel worked to clear the wreckage and ensure smooth passage for other vehicles. The area remained under traffic restriction for over an hour until the truck was removed and the scene secured.

Investigation and preliminary findings

Preliminary investigations suggest that all sixteen passengers belonged to the same village and were returning home after performing idol immersion rituals at the Hindon River. The mini truck, meant primarily for goods transportation, had been used to carry people—a practice common in rural and semi-urban regions despite being unsafe and illegal under traffic regulations. The vehicle was reportedly overloaded, which could have contributed to the driver losing control.

ACP Twinkle Jain mentioned that no formal complaint or case had been registered as of Sunday night, and the police were still in the process of recording statements from the survivors and witnesses. Forensic and mechanical examinations of the vehicle are expected to be conducted to determine whether any technical fault or brake failure was involved. The authorities are also verifying whether the driver had a valid license and if the vehicle was authorized to transport passengers.

Locals from Sarfabad village who gathered at the hospital expressed grief and anger over the incident. Many questioned why no proper safety measures or checks were in place to prevent such tragedies. Relatives of the victims said the group had been participating in community rituals for years and usually returned in small groups, but this time they had decided to travel together in the same vehicle. The emotional impact of the accident was evident as villagers waited anxiously outside the emergency ward, praying for the recovery of their friends and family members.

The police have confirmed that among the injured, at least five individuals sustained serious head or limb injuries, while others suffered minor bruises and fractures. Doctors have stated that all are under observation and stable, but a few may require prolonged treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The incident has also reignited discussions on road safety and the increasing number of accidents on flyovers connecting Noida and Ghaziabad. Local residents claim that the New Hindon Flyover, despite being a key connector, lacks adequate signage and speed-limit enforcement. Many vehicles are seen speeding or overtaking dangerously, especially at sharp turns. The absence of regular patrolling and warning lights at night further aggravates the risk.

Authorities have promised stricter monitoring of vehicles and adherence to safety protocols on the stretch. The Noida traffic department is reportedly planning to install more reflective barriers and warning signs on the flyover to prevent similar incidents in the future. Moreover, discussions are underway to introduce surveillance cameras along key accident-prone areas for better monitoring.

Residents of Sarfabad and nearby sectors have demanded compensation and strict action against the driver if found negligent. Social organizations have urged the administration to provide financial aid to the families of the deceased and medical assistance to the injured.

In recent years, accidents involving overloaded vehicles and unsafe passenger transport have been a recurring issue in the National Capital Region. Despite periodic drives against illegal passenger transportation in goods carriers, enforcement remains inconsistent. Experts have emphasized that community awareness and strict legal measures are crucial to curb such practices.

The New Hindon Flyover tragedy stands as another grim reminder of how negligence, overloading, and lack of safety vigilance can turn a simple journey into a devastating loss. While the police continue their investigation to uncover the exact reasons behind the mishap, the families of Ranjeet and Vasudev now face the irreversible pain of losing their loved ones to a preventable accident.

As authorities prepare to file a detailed report, the focus remains on improving road safety infrastructure, implementing stricter regulations on vehicle overloading, and ensuring that tragedies like this do not repeat on the roads of Noida and Ghaziabad.
