In a bid to ensure the availability of safe, standard and quality medicines across the national capital, regulatory oversight has been further strengthened. As part of this effort, the Drugs Control Department Delhi conducted a special inspection and enforcement drive in the Nangloi area of West Delhi. The initiative aimed to curb unfair trade practices, verify compliance with pharmaceutical regulations and protect public health.
During the drive, enforcement teams carried out inspections at 12 retail drug outlets operating in the Nangloi locality. Of these, 10 firms were found violating provisions of the Drugs Rules, 1945. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the defaulting firms under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which governs the manufacture, sale and distribution of medicines in India.
The inspections revealed several instances of non-compliance, including improper maintenance of records, deviations from prescribed storage conditions and the display of prohibited discount offer boards for medicines. Such boards were immediately removed on-site, and the concerned retailers were directed to strictly adhere to regulatory norms in the future.
To verify adherence to prescribed quality standards, a total of 49 drug samples were collected during the drive and sent to authorised laboratories for testing and analysis. Based on the test results, further action will be taken against any firm found dealing in substandard or non-compliant medicines.
Health officials stated that the enforcement drive forms part of an ongoing, city-wide strategy to strengthen regulatory vigilance in the pharmaceutical sector. Substandard and counterfeit medicines pose serious risks to patient safety and undermine trust in healthcare systems, making strict enforcement essential.
Retailers and wholesalers have been reminded that compliance with licensing conditions, proper documentation, ethical sales practices and sourcing medicines only from authorised suppliers are mandatory requirements. Any violation will attract strict penal action without exception.
The department has also urged citizens to remain vigilant and purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies, while promptly reporting any suspicious practices. Public cooperation, officials said, plays a crucial role in strengthening regulatory mechanisms.
With continued inspections and enforcement drives, the Delhi government aims to ensure that no unsafe or poor-quality medicine reaches consumers, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public health across the capital.
