The political atmosphere in New Delhi grew increasingly charged on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected to visit the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters later in the evening, following early trends that placed the National Democratic Alliance far ahead in the Bihar Assembly elections. With counting still underway, the ruling coalition’s commanding lead set the tone for a decisive shift in Bihar’s political narrative, prompting celebrations within NDA circles and mounting concerns among the opposition about the fairness and pace of the counting process.

NDA Establishes Strong Early Lead as Counting Progresses Across Bihar

The Bihar Assembly elections entered a crucial phase soon after the counting of votes began at 8 a.m. on Friday, with the NDA quickly crossing the majority benchmark of 122 in the 243-member House. By midday, the alliance was leading in 166 constituencies, a performance that surpassed even its own expectations and re-energized its cadre after a fiercely contested electoral battle.

Within the NDA, the Janata Dal (United) and the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as twin pillars of the alliance’s performance. The JD(U), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, held leads in 75 seats, while the BJP trailed closely with 72 seats, indicating a nearly parallel surge by both parties. Smaller allies also contributed meaningfully to the alliance’s strength, with the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leading in 18 constituencies and the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) ahead in five. Collectively, these numbers reinforced the perception that the NDA had succeeded in retaining its stronghold across diverse regions of Bihar.

On the opposition side, the INDIA bloc struggled to match the pace set by the ruling alliance. The Rashtriya Janata Dal led by Tejashwi Yadav was ahead in 41 seats, emerging as the largest party within the opposition grouping. Congress held leads in seven constituencies, while Left parties—CPI (ML) Liberation, CPI(M), and CPI—posted a limited but noteworthy presence with leads in a handful of constituencies. Though the early picture was decisive, multiple rounds of counting still remained, prompting both alliances to maintain cautious optimism.

The Election Commission’s real-time trends delivered a clear early edge to the NDA. Party workers gathered outside counting centres and BJP offices across the state, bursting into celebrations as numbers continued to favour the ruling alliance. Loud chants lauding the Prime Minister filled the air, making it evident that for many supporters, the election was as much a referendum on Modi’s national leadership as it was a state contest.

In anticipation of the Prime Minister’s expected arrival, BJP headquarters in Delhi began preparing to receive him around 6:30 p.m. Such visits traditionally follow major political wins and serve as a symbolic acknowledgment of the party workers’ contributions. Senior party leaders and workers awaited the Prime Minister’s presence with enthusiasm, seeing it as a sign of confidence and gratitude at a critical electoral juncture.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav echoed this sentiment when he addressed reporters in Indore, attributing the evolving electoral outcome to Modi’s decisive leadership. According to him, the electoral tide in Bihar had been visibly turning in favour of the NDA long before counting began, based on his interactions and observations during the campaign phase. His remarks framed the Bihar results as part of a larger national trend in which Modi’s influence has played a defining role in recent state outcomes in Maharashtra, Haryana, and now Bihar.

Opposition Alleges Irregularities as Counting Slows; Tensions Rise Over Process Integrity

With trends clearly favouring the NDA, the opposition’s tone grew increasingly combative. Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Ram raised serious concerns regarding the integrity of the counting process. Even as the Election Commission continued issuing updated constituency-wise leads, Ram argued that irregularities had emerged at multiple centres.

His biggest allegation centred on a sudden and unexplained slowdown in counting at several locations after the initial rounds. According to him, such disruptions raised doubts over whether the process was being conducted in a fair and transparent manner. He claimed that the deceleration occurred predominantly in seats where the opposition was performing competitively, hinting at the possibility of deliberate procedural manipulation.

Further intensifying his claims, Ram alleged that “server vans” had been spotted near counting centres, an assertion that quickly spread across political discussions. He argued that these vans raised suspicions of potential interference with electronic data systems linked to the counting process. Ram also cited reports of booth-level irregularities, asserting that discrepancies had been observed in voter turnout records and counting summaries.

His remarks reflected an atmosphere of distrust within the opposition, reminiscent of earlier controversies surrounding vote counting in states like Maharashtra and Haryana. Ram stated that such precedents inevitably influenced public perceptions, making it natural for citizens—and especially opposition political groups—to question whether similar issues could arise in Bihar.

Opposition supporters echoed these doubts on social media and at local party offices, demanding that the Election Commission respond to allegations swiftly. Party leaders argued that public trust in the electoral process depended heavily on maintaining transparency, especially during closely monitored state polls involving high political stakes and intense competition.

While the Election Commission did not immediately comment on the allegations at the time, officials maintained that counting was being conducted in accordance with established procedures, including multi-layered verification mechanisms. Nonetheless, the claims added a layer of tension to an already heated political landscape.

As counting continued through the afternoon and into the evening, Bihar remained firmly in the national spotlight. The stakes were high for both alliances: for the NDA, a strong mandate would reinforce its dominant political position and strengthen Nitish Kumar’s leadership within the state and the coalition arrangement; for the INDIA bloc, any upward shift in numbers during later rounds would offer a chance to project resilience against early negative trends.

In Delhi, preparations continued for Prime Minister Modi’s anticipated arrival at the BJP headquarters. The mood among party workers remained jubilant as early trends solidified into a commanding lead, reinforcing the belief that the NDA was poised for a decisive victory. For many, the Prime Minister’s presence at the headquarters would symbolize both the culmination of an intensive campaign and the beginning of a renewed political chapter shaped by a strengthened mandate in Bihar.
