The sweeping mandate for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar has not only reaffirmed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s political dominance in the state but has also significantly strengthened his leverage within the ruling coalition at the national level. The 2025 election outcome places him in a position of rare political authority, where his long-established image as a shrewd strategist and an unparalleled survivor has once again proven decisive in rewriting the terms of Bihar’s political game.

NDA Victory Repositions Nitish Kumar at the Centre of Bihar’s Power Matrix

The Bihar election of 2025 has dramatically altered the balance of power both within the state and the NDA framework. From the early counting trends, it became evident that Nitish Kumar was poised to secure his ninth term as chief minister—a remarkable feat that further cements his position as one of India’s longest-serving and most influential regional leaders. His continuous tenure since 2005, interrupted only by strategic realignments, reflects a political acumen that few leaders in modern Indian politics have demonstrated.

Nitish Kumar’s return with yet another commanding mandate has two profound implications. First, it challenges the primacy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the senior partner in the NDA, by signaling that Bihar’s electorate views Nitish as indispensable, irrespective of the national leadership’s reservations. Second, it neutralizes the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), his principal rival, in a manner that leaves little political space for the opposition to regroup in the near future.

Political analyst N.K. Chowdhary summed up the sentiment by noting that while the NDA was always considered ahead, the scale of the “Nitish avalanche” exceeded expectations. According to him, the mandate clearly underscores the payoff from Nitish’s sustained focus on governance, social welfare, and developmental reforms. The electorate has once again reinforced his role as the custodian of “sushasan”—the moniker that came to define his political identity over the last two decades.

Over his long career, Nitish Kumar has developed a reputation for not allowing political partners to overshadow him, switching alliances when he sensed diminishing respect or political obstacles. This adaptability, often interpreted as opportunism by critics, has nevertheless given him longevity unmatched in Bihar’s political history.

One factor that has defined the Nitish era is the transformation of Bihar’s socio-economic landscape. When he first came to power in 2005, the state lagged far behind national averages across most development indicators. However, assessments made on the eve of the 2025 elections show substantial progress in several domains.

Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) between 2005–06 and 2019–21 indicates that Bihar made improvements at a pace exceeding the national average on a wide range of metrics. For example, by 2019–21, the state had nearly matched the national average in household electrification—a significant achievement for one of India’s most populous and historically underdeveloped regions. While challenges remain in areas like nutrition, employment, and infrastructure, Nitish Kumar’s tenure is widely acknowledged for laying the foundation for more robust governance and institutional stability.

This trajectory of progress has reinforced his credibility among voters, many of whom associate Bihar’s turnaround—from one of India’s least developed states to a more competitive regional economy—with Nitish’s leadership style, administrative discipline, and ability to navigate complex coalition arrangements.

Nitish Kumar’s Influence Within NDA Grows as Bihar Results Strengthen His National Profile

The 2025 mandate does not merely carry state-level significance. It also has far-reaching implications for national politics, particularly within the NDA led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Janata Dal (United) holds 12 MPs in the Lok Sabha—an important bloc for the stability of the NDA coalition in Delhi. With Bihar now securely under his control again, Nitish Kumar’s negotiating power within the alliance has risen considerably.

Rahul Verma of the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) rightly observes that Nitish emerges from this election stronger than he has been in years. His party now commands numbers in the Bihar Assembly that give him a more assured footing than in the immediate past. As a result, his significance in national politics has increased in tandem. Verma compares Nitish to towering political figures like Jyoti Basu and Naveen Patnaik—chief ministers who not only shaped their states but also exerted considerable influence on national affairs.

Nitish’s enhanced position may also lead to renewed debates about his relationship with the BJP, which appeared initially reluctant to project him as the NDA’s chief ministerial face. For now, such discussions remain speculative, but what is clear is that the election outcome has put Nitish in a commanding position, enabling him to assert demands and expectations more confidently within the alliance.

Nitish’s career trajectory reflects remarkable flexibility and strategic thinking. Emerging from the JP Movement of the 1970s—a crucible for leaders with strong ideological leanings—he entered electoral politics in the early 1980s. He won his first assembly election in 1985 from Harnaut and later became a Member of Parliament from Barh and Nalanda. Over decades, he has mastered the art of coalition politics, forming and breaking alliances but always maintaining electoral relevance.

One of the distinctive features of Nitish’s political journey is his preference for remaining a member of the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC), rather than contesting assembly elections directly. Since 2006, he has chosen to govern from the Upper House—a rare choice for a chief minister. Yet this unconventional approach has not diminished his authority; instead, it has reinforced his image as a leader who writes his own rules.

Nitish’s repeated shifts in alliances—leaving the BJP in 2013, leading the Mahagathbandhan with RJD and Congress in 2015, returning to the NDA, then briefly rejoining the MGB, and again returning to the NDA—have often earned him labels such as “opportunist,” “survivor,” and “time server.” However, these descriptions have never deterred him. He has embraced them with equanimity, knowing that his choices have consistently kept him at the center of Bihar’s political power structure.

What also stands out is that Nitish’s political identity is less about ideology and more about governance, stability, and adaptability. Unlike many regional leaders who build personality-centric politics, Nitish’s appeal is deeply tied to his ability to transform governance systems and deliver administrative results. This has allowed him to withstand cycles of political realignments and public sentiment swings more effectively than others.

This election reaffirms that Nitish Kumar remains the singular force who shapes Bihar’s political narrative. His moves—whether aligning with the NDA or joining forces with the Opposition—significantly influence the direction of state politics. His strategic instincts, timing, and ability to bring disparate political forces together have not only prolonged his career but have kept him indispensable.

As he enters yet another term, the questions surrounding his future role—both in Bihar and at the Centre—will continue to generate debate. What is beyond dispute, though, is that the 2025 election has once again demonstrated that Nitish Kumar holds all the cards, and his grip over Bihar’s political landscape remains as firm as ever.
