The legal assistance system available to inmates at Gautam Buddh Nagar District Jail was reviewed during an inspection of the Legal Aid Clinic conducted by the District Legal Services Authority. The inspection focused on the availability of legal support, access to advocates, record management, and the overall functioning of legal aid services within the prison. A legal awareness camp was also organized to educate inmates about their rights and the availability of free legal assistance.
District Legal Services Authority Secretary Shivani Rawat visited the district jail and inspected the Legal Aid Clinic along with different prison barracks. Jailor Sanjay Sahi and Deputy Jailor Surjeet Singh were also present during the inspection. Jail authorities informed officials that a total of 2,479 inmates are currently lodged in Gautam Buddh Nagar District Jail.
Special Review Conducted in Juvenile Barrack
During the inspection, special attention was given to the juvenile barrack. Officials interacted directly with juvenile inmates to gather information regarding their legal cases, access to advocates, and the legal assistance being provided to them.
Authorities reviewed inmate case records and examined whether proper legal representation had been arranged. Juvenile inmates informed officials that advocates had been provided either privately or through the District Legal Services Authority.
Following the review, jail authorities were directed to ensure that the names of advocates are clearly mentioned in the legal records and inmate case cards to maintain transparency and avoid administrative confusion.
Officials also instructed the prison administration to maintain cleanliness, discipline, and an organized environment inside the juvenile barrack to ensure better living conditions for inmates.
Awareness Camp Conducted for Inmates
A legal awareness camp was organized at the legal assistance center inside the district jail, where inmates were informed about their legal rights, court procedures, and the availability of free legal aid services.
During the session, officials explained that financially weaker and eligible inmates can receive free legal assistance through the District Legal Services Authority. Inmates were also informed about the process of obtaining legal representation and understanding their rights during judicial proceedings.
Juvenile inmates present during the awareness camp confirmed that advocates were available to represent them in their cases. Authorities emphasized that no inmate should remain deprived of legal support and representation.
Legal Aid Clinic and Record System Reviewed
Officials also reviewed the functioning of the Legal Aid Clinic operating within the prison premises. Information was collected regarding the legal support activities being carried out by inmate para-legal volunteers assisting other prisoners.
Registers, records, and documentation maintained by the para-legal volunteers were examined during the inspection. Necessary directions were issued regarding proper record maintenance, regular updates, and systematic documentation procedures.
Authorities stated that accurate documentation and timely legal assistance are essential for protecting the legal rights of inmates. Continuous efforts are being made to strengthen the functioning of legal aid systems within correctional institutions.
Focus on Strengthening Legal Support System
During the inspection, jail authorities were instructed to ensure that every inmate receives timely legal assistance and that no prisoner is deprived of access to an advocate.
The District Legal Services Authority also emphasized the need for regular legal awareness programs inside prisons so that inmates remain informed about their constitutional and legal rights.
The inspection and awareness initiative at Gautam Buddh Nagar District Jail is being viewed as an important step toward improving legal aid services and ensuring fair access to justice for all inmates lodged in the prison system.
