  • Narendra Modi accused previous SP governments of misusing projects like Noida International Airport, calling them an “ATM for loot.”
  • Akhilesh Yadav hit back, alleging political motives and questioning whether development claims are translating into real benefits for the public.

Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh | The inauguration of the Noida International Airport at Jewar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28 has sparked a political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP), with both sides using the occasion to sharpen their narratives ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

During the inauguration event, the Prime Minister launched a strong attack on the Samajwadi Party, accusing previous governments of misusing development projects for corruption. He alleged that the airport project had earlier been treated as an “ATM for loot,” suggesting that public resources were diverted for political and financial gains under earlier regimes.

Modi positioned the current government’s approach as a departure from past practices, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and a focus on public welfare. He highlighted that projects like the Jewar airport are being developed to boost connectivity, attract investment, and create employment opportunities, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh.

The Prime Minister’s remarks were seen as part of a broader strategy to consolidate political support in the region, which plays a crucial role in determining electoral outcomes in the state. By linking infrastructure development with governance reforms, the BJP aims to project itself as a driver of economic growth and stability.

Responding to the allegations, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav hit back at the Prime Minister, accusing the ruling party of making politically motivated statements. He said such remarks reflect a sense of nervousness, suggesting that the BJP is reacting to the possibility of electoral setbacks.

Akhilesh Yadav questioned the government’s claims of development and argued that ground realities do not match the narrative being presented. He also raised concerns about whether large infrastructure projects are translating into tangible benefits for the public, particularly in terms of employment and economic inclusion.

The exchange of sharp remarks between the two leaders underscores the intensifying political competition in Uttar Pradesh. With the 2027 Assembly elections in mind, both the BJP and the SP are increasingly using development projects as platforms to engage voters and shape public opinion.

Political analysts note that the Jewar airport inauguration has gone beyond being a routine administrative event and has evolved into a significant political moment. It reflects how infrastructure initiatives are being integrated into electoral strategies, with each side attempting to claim credit or assign blame.

The Noida International Airport is expected to play a key role in enhancing connectivity in the National Capital Region and boosting regional economic activity. However, the political debate surrounding the project indicates that development and politics remain closely intertwined in Uttar Pradesh’s evolving electoral landscape.
