Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the first week of January, during which he will chair an important meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs. An official source confirmed the development on Tuesday.
According to the official, Amit Shah is expected to arrive in Port Blair on January 2, where he will be received by the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd.), at the airport.
Key Meetings and Events Scheduled
The Home Minister will chair the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs on January 3. The meeting will be held in Wandoor, and is expected to focus on key administrative and internal security-related issues concerning the Union Territory.
Later the same day, Shah will attend a special programme on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) auditorium in Dollygunj. The event is aimed at spreading awareness about the newly enacted criminal laws and their implications for governance, justice delivery, and law enforcement.
Officials said the Home Minister’s visit reflects the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening governance, security, and administrative coordination in the strategically important island territory.
Departure on January 4
After completing his scheduled engagements, Amit Shah is expected to depart from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on January 4.
The visit comes shortly after his previous trip to the islands in December 2025, when he attended the 116th anniversary commemoration of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s iconic poem ‘Sagara Pran Talamala’, a historic literary work symbolising India’s freedom struggle and sacrifice.
*CDS General Anil Chauhan Also Visiting*
In a parallel development, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan is also scheduled to arrive in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on January 2.
According to officials, on January 3, General Chauhan will visit Car Nicobar, the northernmost part of the archipelago, where he will review strategic installations and operational preparedness. He will also visit the Andaman and Nicobar Command at Sri Vijaya Puram, where he will interact with senior defence officials and review joint command operations.
The visit of both the Home Minister and the CDS underlines the growing strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India’s maritime security framework, especially in the context of the Indo-Pacific region.
