New Delhi | January 8, 2026: The Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Thursday informed the House that the matter concerning the alleged remarks made by the Leader of the Opposition regarding Sikh Gurus has been referred to the Committee of Privileges for detailed examination and submission of a report. In view of the pending legislative business, the Winter Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly has also been extended by one additional day.
Serious Allegations Affecting Assembly Dignity
Making a statement in the House, the Speaker said that the issue involves serious allegations which have a bearing on the dignity of the Assembly as well as sentiments associated with Sikh Gurus. Considering the gravity of the matter, he decided to refer the entire issue to the Committee of Privileges so that it can be examined thoroughly and a factual report can be placed before the House.
Pending Legislative Business and Disruptions
Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh addressed the Assembly and stated that important government business has remained pending due to continuous disruptions caused by the Opposition over the last two days. He pointed out that crucial legislative items, including the passage of the Motion of Thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s Address and discussions related to pollution, could not be taken up because of repeated interruptions in the proceedings.
Request to Extend Winter Session
The Minister requested the Speaker to extend the duration of the ongoing Winter Session by one day to ensure that the pending government business could be transacted smoothly. He also urged that the matter related to the alleged remarks of the Leader of the Opposition be referred to the Committee of Privileges for inquiry within a stipulated timeframe, so that the issue could be resolved in an institutional and time-bound manner.
Speaker Emphasizes Impartial Examination
Responding to the request, Speaker Vijender Gupta said that he was mindful of both the seriousness of the allegations and the need to maintain the dignity and decorum of the House. He stated that remarks allegedly made about Sikh Gurus are a sensitive issue and cannot be taken lightly. Therefore, referring the matter to the Committee of Privileges was necessary to ensure an impartial and structured examination.
Forensic Examination of Video Recording
The Speaker further informed the House that the video recording related to the alleged remarks made by the Leader of the Opposition has already been sent to a forensic laboratory for examination. He said that the forensic analysis would help establish the authenticity of the video and clarify whether any tampering or manipulation had taken place. The findings of the forensic examination are expected to assist the Committee of Privileges in its inquiry.
Assembly Functions and Parliamentary Mechanism
Vijender Gupta emphasized that the Assembly functions on the basis of rules, procedures, and established conventions, and any issue that raises questions about the conduct of members or affects the dignity of the House must be examined through the appropriate parliamentary mechanism. He reiterated that the Committee of Privileges is empowered to look into such matters and submit its findings to the Assembly for further consideration.
Extension Ensures Completion of Key Agenda
The extension of the Winter Session by one day, according to the Speaker, has been approved to ensure that essential legislative and policy-related discussions are not left incomplete due to disruptions. He said that the Assembly has a responsibility to the people of Delhi to carry out its legislative functions efficiently and that adequate time must be provided to address important issues before the House.
Political Tensions Amid Session Disruptions
The developments come amid heightened political tension between the ruling party and the Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. Repeated disruptions over the past two days have stalled proceedings, leading to concerns over unfinished legislative business. The decision to extend the session reflects the government’s intent to complete key agenda items despite the disruptions.
Adjournment and Call for Cooperation
Concluding his statement, the Speaker announced that the proceedings of the House have been adjourned till 11:00 AM on Friday. He expressed hope that when the Assembly reconvenes, members from all sides would cooperate to ensure smooth functioning of the House and allow pending business to be taken up in a constructive manner.
Balancing Sensitive Issues and Legislative Work
The referral of the matter to the Committee of Privileges and the extension of the Winter Session underline the Assembly’s effort to address sensitive issues through due process while balancing the need to complete legislative work within the session.
