New Delhi | March 16, 2026 — Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressing concern over attempts by some opposition parties to move a proposal for the removal of the presiding officer in the Lok Sabha.
In his letter, Gupta described the move as unfortunate and said that the office of the Speaker stands above party politics and is entrusted with safeguarding the rules, traditions and dignity of Parliament.
Concern Over Attempt to Move Removal Motion
The Assembly Speaker noted that the proposal to remove the Lok Sabha Speaker was ultimately rejected through a voice vote in the House, reaffirming the confidence of the members in the authority and impartial functioning of the presiding officer.
Gupta stated that it was regrettable that certain political groups chose to pursue such a proposal for narrow political interests, despite the constitutional and institutional importance of the Speaker’s office.
Speaker’s Neutrality Central to Parliamentary Democracy
In his letter, Gupta emphasized that the position of the Speaker holds extraordinary importance in the functioning of India’s parliamentary democracy.
He said the Speaker serves as the guardian of the House’s dignity and the custodian of its rules, traditions and institutional discipline. The authority of the presiding officer ensures that parliamentary proceedings are conducted in an orderly and fair manner while safeguarding the rights and privileges of all members.
According to Gupta, the strength of the Speaker’s office stems from the collective respect and trust of the House.
Respect for Parliamentary Institutions Essential
Gupta further wrote that long-standing parliamentary traditions expect the Speaker to function above party interests with impartiality, balance and institutional integrity.
He warned that attempts to bring removal motions against the presiding officer for narrow political purposes risk undermining the fundamental spirit of the parliamentary system.
The Assembly Speaker also appreciated those Members of Parliament who opposed the proposal and stood in defence of parliamentary traditions.
Appreciation for Lok Sabha Leadership
In his concluding remarks, Gupta said that under the leadership of Om Birla, the Lok Sabha has continued to function with balance and dignity, enabling meaningful democratic debate while maintaining discipline and decorum.
He extended his respect and appreciation to the Lok Sabha Speaker and expressed confidence that the institution would continue to uphold the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy in the future.
