The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation has launched a major passenger safety upgrade in Noida by installing all-weather bulbs in its buses. This initiative aims to address the visibility challenges caused by dense fog during winter mornings and evenings, improving road safety for commuters across the district and beyond.
All-weather bulbs replace seasonal fog lights
With rising winter chill and frequent fog cover reducing visibility on roads, UP roadways has started fitting all-weather bulbs in its entire Noida bus fleet of 305 operational buses. Earlier, buses were equipped with fog lights only during the winter season, but this year the transport corporation has replaced them with bulbs that work effectively in fog, rain, low-light conditions, and even in summer nights.
According to officials, the new bulbs enhance visibility not only in winter fog, but also during rainfall and dim evening hours, helping drivers navigate roads safely under diverse climate conditions. This upgrade makes seasonal fog-light fittings—previously mandatory every year—no longer necessary.
Transport corporation begins installation across 305 buses
As the winter season intensifies, incidents linked to poor visibility have continued to be a recurrent risk. To ensure uninterrupted and safer bus operations, the transport corporation has begun installing all-weather bulbs across all 305 buses in Noida. Officials also clarified that until last year, seasonal fog lights were installed during winter, but from this year onward, these will be permanently replaced with the new bulbs.
This move aligns with the corporation’s broader strategy to maintain reliable public transport services even when visibility drops sharply due to fog in the NCR region. Additionally, drivers are being given safety guidance and continuous training to follow speed limits, operate buses at a controlled pace, and adapt to fog-driven road challenges.
Nearly ₹2 lakh annual fog-light cost saved
Every winter season, UP roadways used to spend close to ₹2 lakh retrofitting fog lights on buses to improve long-distance visibility. However, with the All-Weather Bulb initiative, these lights won’t need annual reinstallations or removals, directly eliminating seasonal expense, time, and additional maintenance overhead.
Beyond cost savings, the bulbs are expected to reduce wear-and-tear caused by repeated fog-light fittings and removals. Officials further emphasized that the upcoming savings extend beyond bulb replacements, including recurring maintenance and installation labor costs.
Driver training and speed directives continue
Despite improved lighting, the transport corporation has underlined that driver preparedness remains key. Winter safety training programs are underway, with clear instructions issued to drivers to maintain moderate speed, operate buses cautiously in fog, and avoid unnecessary acceleration that could put passengers at risk.
Authorities have also reiterated that installation of all-weather bulbs is one of the many layered interventions meant to reinforce passenger safety while maintaining transport reliability during winter months when fog is most disruptive.
The transition reflects a balanced approach combining visibility improvement, cost efficiency, structured driver training, and strengthened transport planning to better serve passengers year-round.
