Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met with his Australian counterpart, Jason Clare, on Wednesday to discuss the growing educational partnership between India and Australia. The meeting took place during an International Education Conference in Melbourne, where both ministers emphasized the importance of expanding educational ties and fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students from both nations.
Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted the potential of India and Australia to advance global knowledge, leveraging technology to address challenges and creating new opportunities for students. “Together, the countries can advance knowledge, leverage technology for global challenges, and create endless opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship for our students,” Dharmendra Pradhan said. He noted the significant milestone of Australian universities establishing campuses in India, marking the deepening educational collaboration between the two countries.
Australia has become the first country to set up a foreign university campus in India. Deakin University recently inaugurated its new campus in GIFT City, Gujarat, offering specialized programs in business analytics and cybersecurity. This development is expected to provide Indian students with world-class education and open up further academic and research opportunities. Additionally, Dharmendra Pradhan mentioned that Australian universities like Deakin have had a long-standing presence in India, with Deakin involved in Indian education for 30 years.
During the bilateral meeting, Jason Clare underscored the transformative power of a robust education system, predicting that by 2035, one in four university degrees worldwide will be earned in India. The ministers expressed a mutual commitment to strengthen institutional linkages between higher education institutions in both countries. They also discussed the potential for establishing more branch campuses of Australian universities in India, focusing on critical and emerging technologies.
In his social media post on X, Dharmendra Pradhan reflected on the growing collaboration: “The establishment of Australian university campuses in India is just the beginning—there’s much more that can be accomplished. Together, we can advance knowledge, leverage tech for global challenges, and create endless opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship for our students.” He further emphasized India’s commitment to being a trusted partner in human-centric development.
Jason Clare also shared a moment of camaraderie, gifting Dharmendra Pradhan a personalized jersey with the name “Pradhan” and the number 20, symbolizing the strong educational ties between the two nations. Jason Clare captioned the video of the gift exchange with “Mateship and Maitri,” reflecting the close friendship between Australia and India.
Earlier, on October 21, Dharmendra Pradhan met with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in school education, vocational training, and research, underscoring India’s efforts to strengthen global educational partnerships.
