President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Warren Stephens, the CEO of Arkansas-based investment bank Stephens Inc., to serve as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. The announcement was made via a statement on Truth Social, where Donald Trump expressed his excitement about the nomination. “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full time,” Donald Trump said. “I am thrilled that he will now have that opportunity as the top diplomat, representing the USA to one of America’s most cherished and beloved allies.”
Stephens is a prominent businessman who has been a significant supporter of Donald Trump’s political campaigns. He donated millions of dollars to Donald Trump’s re-election effort in 2020 and has been a vocal backer of the Republican Party. If confirmed, Stephens will play a crucial role in maintaining the strong bilateral ties between the US and the UK, often referred to as the “special relationship.”
The position of US Ambassador to the UK is one of the most prestigious diplomatic posts, and it is often filled by individuals who have made substantial contributions to the president’s campaign. During Donald Trump’s first term, the role was held by Woody Johnson, a major Republican donor and owner of the New York Jets. Previous administrations have followed a similar approach, with President Barack Obama appointing long-time Democratic fundraiser Louis Susman to the position.
Although Stephens has been a key supporter of Donald Trump in recent years, his political backing has not always aligned with the president. In the 2016 election, Stephens was initially opposed to Donald Trump’s candidacy and donated approximately $4 million to political groups that worked against Donald Trump’s rise. However, after Donald Trump secured the Republican nomination in 2020, Stephens shifted his support and donated to Donald Trump’s campaign and several Republican groups and Senate candidates.
In a statement following his nomination, Stephens expressed gratitude and pride in the opportunity to represent the United States in the UK. “I have expressed to President Donald Trump that I would be extremely proud to serve our country and his administration, working to implement the President’s agenda and further strengthen the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom,” Stephens said.
Stephens and his wife also run the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Foundation, which has made substantial donations to various causes, including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the University of Mississippi, and the Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock. Should his nomination be confirmed, Stephens will take on a pivotal role in fostering diplomatic relations between the US and one of its closest allies.
