In response to escalating tensions in Gaza and concerns over potential destabilization in Jordan, the United Kingdom and Jordan have formed a strategic partnership to provide aid to Gaza while safeguarding Jordan’s stability, analysts reported to The Media Line.
Jordan’s Armed Forces spearheaded a multinational effort, involving nine nations, to deliver over 10 tonnes of supplies into Gaza, marking the largest aid airdrop in a single day, as confirmed by the UK government.
Facilitated by Jordan’s Air Forces and airfields, the UK has been actively involved in delivering aid to Gaza, with plans for additional shipments following Israel’s announcement of allowing aid to pass through a Jordanian land crossing.
Describing the collaboration as “instrumental,” the British government highlighted close coordination with Jordanian counterparts in delivering aid, including a recent agreement with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation to distribute $1.26 million of British aid to Gaza.
Amidst ongoing protests in Jordan against Israel, concerns persist over the potential influx of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank, with Jordan warning against any attempts by Israel to relocate Palestinians, deeming it a “declaration of war.”
The alliance between the UK and Jordan underscores a commitment to protecting the political and demographic stability of Jordan, which plays a crucial role in regional stability, according to Jones.
Historical ties between the UK and Jordan, along with shared military connections, have solidified their alliance, with former British Ambassador Peter Millet highlighting mutual trust and cooperation.
King Abdullah and Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah’s education at the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst further cemented the bond between the two nations, with Millet emphasizing Jordan’s interest in garnering international support to influence British policy towards Israel.
While aid shipments to Gaza aim to alleviate humanitarian suffering, they also serve broader geopolitical objectives, including ensuring Jordan’s stability and influencing international opinion regarding Israel’s actions in the region.
