Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced on Monday that the state will enforce stricter regulations for the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, making it mandatory for all non-residents to obtain the permit before entering the state. The move aims to strengthen control over migration and protect indigenous communities from external influences.
During a joint meeting with top government officials and leaders of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu underscored the necessity of reinforcing the ILP system to prevent illegal entries and manage the prolonged stay of non-local migrants. He emphasized that the primary objective of this initiative is to safeguard the rights and interests of the state’s indigenous tribes from being overwhelmed by an influx of outsiders.
“Our goal is to shield our native tribes from any adverse effects of migration and to ensure that our indigenous culture and way of life are preserved,” Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated during the meeting. He expressed commitment to taking concrete steps to enhance the ILP system, reflecting the government’s dedication to addressing the concerns raised by local communities.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the state government is in the process of preparing internal measures to bolster the existing ILP system. He also noted the importance of incorporating feedback from AAPSU, the leading students’ organization in the state, to ensure the new measures are effective and aligned with the needs of the local population.
AAPSU, led by President Dozi Tana Tara, presented a detailed report during the meeting, outlining a recent survey conducted by the union. The presentation included various strategies and recommendations to strengthen the ILP system, aimed at addressing issues related to illegal immigration and the impacts of prolonged stays by non-residents.
The new regulations are expected to tighten control over the movement of individuals into Arunachal Pradesh, ensuring that only those with valid permits can enter the state. This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to balance development with the protection of indigenous communities and their unique cultural heritage.
By reinforcing the ILP system, Arunachal Pradesh aims to manage migration more effectively while preserving the integrity of its local traditions and communities.
