President Biden pledges unwavering backing for Israel following fears of potential reprisal from Iran after a recent attack in Syria.President Joe Biden has affirmed steadfast support for Israel in the face of escalating tensions with Iran, promising “ironclad” assistance amid concerns of retaliatory actions following a recent attack.
Joe Biden’s assurance comes after Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria, sparking fears of potential reprisals from Tehran. The President warned of Iran’s threat to launch a “significant attack,” stating, “We’re going to do all we can to protect Israel’s security.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemned the Israeli attack, likening it to an assault on Iran itself. He vowed that the “evil regime” would be punished for its actions, although the nature of any potential retaliation remains uncertain.
While direct confrontation between Iran and Israel could escalate the conflict further, experts suggest alternative means such as attacks through Iranian proxies like Hezbollah or cyberattacks targeting Israel.
The recent attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria resulted in the deaths of thirteen individuals, including senior Iranian military figures. Although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility, it is widely believed to be behind the assault.
In light of the heightened tensions, both US and Israeli forces in the region have been placed on high alert. Mr. Biden reiterated his commitment to Israel’s security, emphasizing the “ironclad” nature of US support.
The President’s remarks follow recent disagreements with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Gaza’s conflict and war strategy. Mr. Biden expressed his opposition to Netanyahu’s approach and called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Efforts to de-escalate tensions include diplomatic engagements, with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Iraq reportedly conveying messages from the Biden administration urging restraint to Iran.
Amidst the ongoing conflict, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports a significant loss of life, with over 33,000 casualties, primarily comprising women and children.
The conflict traces back to Hamas’s initial attack in October, which resulted in casualties and hostage-taking, igniting months of violence in the region.
