Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed heavy to moderate rainfall on Friday, leading to waterlogging in multiple areas and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert, advising people to remain prepared for potentially severe weather conditions. The alert warns of possible disruptions to transport services, including road, rail, and air travel, while power outages are also likely due to the ongoing weather.
The heavy downpour caused significant waterlogging on key roads across the city, slowing down traffic and affecting daily commuting. Many areas in central and south Delhi reported severe flooding, adding to the existing infrastructural challenges. Commuters faced delays, and emergency services have been put on high alert.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms and lightning are expected in parts of northwest India, including Delhi, with Himachal Pradesh and other nearby states also bracing for adverse weather. However, Haryana is likely to be an exception to the current weather conditions. The temperature in Delhi on Friday is forecast to remain lower than usual, with the maximum temperature hovering around 28 degrees Celsius, which is six degrees below the normal seasonal average. This dip in temperature is attributed to the continuous rain showers that have persisted over the past few days.
Meanwhile, the weather department also highlighted the presence of a depression located near Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh. This system, situated 40 kilometres west-southwest of the city and 70 kilometres west-northwest of Hardoi, is expected to move in a north-northeast direction over the next 24 hours. As this system moves further, a gradual reduction in rainfall activity in the Delhi-NCR region is expected, bringing some respite from the heavy downpours.
In addition to Delhi-NCR, other northern states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to witness rainfall over the next few days. Uttarakhand is forecast to receive heavy to moderate rainfall between September 13 and 14, with some isolated areas likely to experience extremely heavy showers. In Haryana, light to moderate rainfall is expected from September 13 to 15, with brief periods of heavy rainfall. Both eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh are also predicted to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during this period, which could lead to further challenges in transportation and daily activities.
