In a deeply concerning development, South African activists have raised serious allegations against Israel, claiming it used a shadowy non-governmental organisation to orchestrate the removal of Palestinians from Gaza under the guise of humanitarian assistance. This controversy unfolded following the arrival of a flight carrying 153 Palestinians at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, which remained grounded for nearly 12 hours while passengers were denied disembarkation. The incident triggered widespread confusion, anger, and scrutiny, with activists and authorities uncovering irregularities that point to a potential scheme involving coercion, misinformation, and exploitation of vulnerable Palestinian individuals seeking safety after months of conflict.

Al-Majd Europe and the Alleged Scheme of Forced Evacuation

The focus of activists’ concerns is Al-Majd Europe, a group claiming to provide humanitarian assistance, emergency food distribution, medical aid, and evacuation support to Muslim communities in conflict zones. Registered in Germany in 2010 with headquarters in Jerusalem, the organisation has long promoted itself as a conduit for helping Palestinians leave Gaza for treatment or relocation. However, activists have alleged that the group’s operations conceal a darker agenda, facilitating forced displacement under the influence of Israeli authorities.

The flight that landed in South Africa on 13 November had been organised through Al-Majd Europe, but the process raised immediate red flags. South African authorities were reportedly unaware of the flight, and the passengers themselves arrived without documentation or clarity about their destination. Activists noted that several Palestinians boarded the flight without understanding where they were being taken, indicating manipulation and coercion. Na’eem Jeenah, a Johannesburg-based scholar and activist, described the developments as evidence that Israel was exploiting Palestinian desperation to advance a policy of forced displacement. He suggested that Al-Majd Europe acts as a front for Israeli state and intelligence operations, targeting professional and educated Palestinians—such as doctors, educators, and businesspeople—for permanent relocation outside Gaza.

The allegations are supported by reports that the Palestinians were transferred from Gaza to the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing in southern Israel and then to Ramon Airport, before taking flights through Nairobi to Johannesburg. This operation, according to activists, concealed the true intent from both the evacuees and the South African government. Many passengers carried only minimal belongings—wallets, phones, passports, and clothes—highlighting the controlled and limited nature of the transfer. Families paid significant sums, ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 per person, for the journey, raising further concerns about potential exploitation under the guise of humanitarian aid.

Sarah Oosthuizen, another South African activist working with the Palestinians, stated that boarding passes for the evacuees indicated a range of destinations from India to Malaysia and Indonesia. This ambiguity reinforced suspicions that passengers were intentionally misled about their travel destinations, pointing to elements of human trafficking and deception. Several refugees reported being unaware of the journey’s trajectory until arriving in South Africa, highlighting the opaque and coercive nature of the operation.

Khalid Vawda, an activist with Social Intifada in Johannesburg, noted that Al-Majd Europe had been promoting its evacuation services on social media for months. Palestinians either approached the group voluntarily or were contacted by its representatives in Gaza. Many assumed the opportunity to leave was legitimate due to the closure of Rafah and the dangerous conditions in Gaza following sporadic Israeli bombings, which had resulted in extensive destruction and high civilian casualties. More than 80 percent of Gaza’s structures have been destroyed since October, leaving large sections uninhabitable and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Chaos Upon Arrival and the Role of South African Authorities

Upon landing, the Palestinians encountered immediate confusion and hardship. The plane remained on the tarmac for almost 12 hours without access to food or water, and several passengers faced critical medical conditions, including a pregnant woman in labor and a child suffering convulsions. Jeenah described conditions on board as “abysmal and horrific,” with babies left unattended for extended periods and families stripped of personal belongings.

Eventually, after deliberations and interventions by South African civil society groups, the government allowed passengers to disembark. President Cyril Ramaphosa described the refugees as having arrived under mysterious circumstances, highlighting the lack of documentation and the unexpected nature of their arrival. While visas were eventually granted on humanitarian grounds, the evacuees were given only temporary accommodation for seven days, and communication from Al-Majd Europe ceased shortly after their arrival.

The episode also highlighted internal tensions within South African authorities. The Department of Home Affairs, led by a member of the pro-Israel Democratic Alliance, initially delayed the processing of the passengers. It was reportedly only through the direct intervention of President Ramaphosa that visas and proper treatment were ensured. Activists emphasised that, while the government ultimately responded, the delay underscored systemic issues in handling humanitarian crises and the need for greater scrutiny of organisations like Al-Majd Europe.

South African activists and civil society groups have demanded a full investigation into the events surrounding the flight, including both the operations of Al-Majd Europe and the response of South African authorities. The activists described the episode as not just a local administrative failure but a potential example of a broader, deliberate scheme of displacement orchestrated by a foreign state. The Palestinian embassy in South Africa condemned the organisation as “unregistered and misleading,” accusing it of exploiting the humanitarian crisis to collect money and facilitate irregular travel.

The circumstances also underscored the ongoing fragility of Gaza, where intermittent Israeli bombings have continued despite a so-called ceasefire, killing hundreds of civilians and exacerbating an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Families fleeing Gaza have faced traumatic conditions, displacement, and exposure to life-threatening situations, making them highly vulnerable to exploitation by external actors.

The allegations against Al-Majd Europe and the Israeli state raise serious legal, ethical, and humanitarian concerns, particularly regarding the violation of the rights of Palestinians seeking refuge. Activists argue that the operation constitutes a form of ethnic cleansing, targeting professionals and other key social groups to permanently alter the demographic and economic landscape of Gaza. They insist that Israel’s actions, if confirmed, reflect a calculated strategy to manipulate vulnerable populations under the pretext of humanitarian aid.

This incident illustrates the intersection of geopolitics, human rights, and refugee protection. The covert nature of the operation, combined with the lack of transparency and oversight, has prompted calls for international attention and intervention. South African authorities and civil society organisations are being urged to investigate fully, not only to provide justice and assistance to the affected Palestinians but also to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the story unfolds, questions remain regarding the accountability of both the Israeli state and Al-Majd Europe, the legality of the evacuation process, and the adequacy of South Africa’s response mechanisms. The unfolding scenario reflects the vulnerabilities of refugees caught in conflict zones and highlights the need for stringent oversight of organisations claiming to provide humanitarian assistance. Activists emphasise that the lessons learned from this incident should inform policies on refugee protection, human rights, and cross-border humanitarian operations.

The South African case serves as a sobering reminder of the complexities surrounding the forced displacement of vulnerable populations and the potential misuse of humanitarian initiatives for strategic geopolitical objectives. Observers note that ensuring safe, transparent, and accountable evacuation processes is critical in upholding the dignity and rights of those affected by conflict, especially in regions like Gaza, where political, social, and security dynamics remain intensely volatile.
