In a shocking development in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, the main accused—Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha—have admitted to their relationship and involvement in the murder of Sonam’s husband, Raja Raghuvanshi. The couple, now in police custody, also helped the Meghalaya Police recreate the crime scene, providing investigators with a clearer timeline and motive behind the killing.
Relationship and Family Pressure Behind Murder Plot
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, Sonam was unhappy with her marriage to Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman. Her family, disapproving of her relationship with Raj Kushwaha, arranged her marriage with Raja. Reports suggest Sonam threatened her family with consequences if they forced her into the marriage—yet it went ahead.
Following the marriage, Sonam and Raj allegedly conspired to eliminate Raja to remove him from their lives permanently. “They wanted somebody out—I mean Raja—out of this whole scene, because they had a relationship,” said Syiem. “Because of the customs where they had to agree between the parents and all that, they thought better to get rid of this person.”
The motive is currently centred around Sonam and Raj’s ongoing affair, but police are also exploring other potential reasons, such as financial gain. However, no financial links or gains have been clearly established yet.
Narco Test Request Rejected Amid Strong Evidence
Raja’s family had demanded a narco-analysis test be conducted on Sonam, possibly hoping it would reveal further details about the conspiracy. But the police have rejected the request, citing that the investigation has already yielded significant evidence, including confessions and crime scene reconstruction.
SP Syiem stated, “They have already admitted to the crime. We have done the reconstruction. They have shown us. We have got the evidence… I don’t see the reason why we should perform [a narco test] at this stage.” He added that narco tests are only used when there is insufficient evidence or when investigators reach a dead end. Furthermore, narco test results are not legally admissible in court, following a Supreme Court ban.
The case has drawn national attention due to its chilling mix of romance, betrayal, and calculated violence. Alongside Sonam and Raj, three more suspects—Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—allegedly hired as contract killers, are under custody. All five are expected to be produced before the court on Thursday.
Meghalaya Police maintain that the evidence gathered so far is enough to proceed with prosecution, and further investigations are underway to trace any other possible connections or involvement in the crime.
