In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Kota, the coaching hub of Rajasthan, a 20-year-old Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) aspirant was found dead in his PG room on Wednesday. The young student, identified as Abhishek, a resident of Guna in Madhya Pradesh, allegedly died by suicide, hanging himself from a ceiling fan. This marks the second suicide by a coaching student in the past 24 hours in Kota, highlighting the increasing mental health concerns faced by students under the immense pressure of competitive exams.
According to the Vigyan Nagar Police Station, Abhishek had been preparing for the JEE at a local coaching institute since May of the previous year. He was residing in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in the Dakaniya area, within the jurisdiction of the Vigyan Nagar Police Station. The police received a call around 7:45 PM on Wednesday reporting the incident. When they arrived at the PG room, they discovered the body of the student hanging from the ceiling fan. Abhishek’s family members were informed, and his body was subsequently taken to the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination, which will be conducted once his family arrives.
Authorities confirmed that no suicide note was found in the room, and the exact reason behind this extreme step remains unknown. The police have stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident, but the pressures of academic life in Kota, known for its rigorous coaching environment, are suspected to be contributing factors.
This unfortunate incident follows another suicide that took place just a day earlier. A 19-year-old JEE aspirant from Haryana, Neeraj, was found hanging from a noose in his hostel room late on Tuesday evening. Both cases have raised serious concerns about the mental health and well-being of students who come to Kota from across the country to prepare for the highly competitive JEE exams. The incidents have sparked conversations about the intense academic pressure, the lack of emotional support, and the mental health challenges faced by students in the city.
Kota has earned the reputation of being the coaching capital of India, with thousands of students flocking there each year in pursuit of their dreams of cracking competitive exams. However, this pressure-cooker environment often takes a toll on the students’ mental health. The tragic deaths have called for urgent attention to be given to student well-being, with calls for more counseling support, stress management programs, and greater awareness about mental health.
Educational institutions and parents alike are being urged to address the emotional and psychological needs of students, who, despite being academically gifted, can often find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of the academic environment in Kota. Mental health experts emphasize the importance of creating a supportive environment that nurtures not just academic excellence but also the emotional and psychological well-being of students.
As Kota grapples with these incidents, the question of how to balance the pursuit of academic success with mental health remains at the forefront of discussions. While students continue to flock to Kota for their coaching, there is a growing recognition that more needs to be done to ensure they are not just prepared for exams, but also equipped to handle the pressures of life.
