Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made a significant announcement on Thursday, showcasing India’s first ballastless track system developed for the ambitious bullet train project connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. This milestone marks a substantial leap in high-speed rail infrastructure development in the country.
Advancements in Bullet Train Project
Minister Vaishnaw shared a video on social media highlighting the progress achieved in the Bullet Train project, including the completion of 295.5 km of piers and 153 km of viaducts. Notably, the Bullet Train is designed to operate at a speed barrier of 320 kmph, setting new standards in India’s rail connectivity.
Innovative J-Slab Ballastless Track System
The ballastless track system, also known as ‘slab track,’ introduces the innovative J-slab design for the first time in India. This system features pre-cast track slabs equipped with fastening devices and rails, ensuring enhanced stability and durability for high-speed operations.
Technical Insights into the Track System
The track system incorporates a reinforced concrete (RC) track bed with a thickness of approximately 300mm, constructed on-site for individual UP and Down track lines on the viaduct top. With a width of 2420mm, the RC track bed offers structural integrity and resilience, as detailed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL).
Integration of Economies and Project Cost
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the economic integration facilitated by the bullet train project, connecting key cities like Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Baroda, Surat, Anand, and Ahmedabad into a cohesive economic zone. This integration streamlines travel and business activities, enhancing connectivity and efficiency across regions.
Financial Commitments and Funding Sources
The projected cost of the bullet train project stands at an estimated ₹1.08 lakh crore, with the Centre committing ₹10,000 crore and Gujarat and Maharashtra contributing ₹5,000 crore each. The remaining funding will be secured through a low-interest loan from Japan, further highlighting the collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships driving this transformative infrastructure initiative.
The unveiling of India’s first ballastless track system for the Bullet Train project reflects a significant stride towards modernizing rail infrastructure and enhancing connectivity, reinforcing India’s position in the global high-speed rail arena.
