Paramount Global announced on Monday that CEO Bob Bakish is stepping down from his position, coinciding with ongoing merger negotiations with Skydance Media.
Bob Bakish, who joined Viacom in 1997 and rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2016, led the company through its merger with CBS in 2019, subsequently rebranded as Paramount Global. He will also vacate his seat on the company’s board of directors.
The company revealed that a trio of executives, including CBS president and CEO George Cheeks, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios president and CEO Chris McCarthy, and Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon head Brian Robbins, will collectively lead Paramount as the new “Office of the CEO.” They will collaborate closely with Paramount CFO Naveen Chopra and the board to steer the company’s future direction.
The transition in leadership comes as Paramount aims to accelerate growth, optimize its streaming strategy, and fortify its balance sheet, following mixed financial results in the first quarter. While the company surpassed earnings expectations, it fell short on revenue, attributing the revenue growth primarily to its streaming segment and the recent Super Bowl event.
The departure of Bob Bakish coincides with Paramount’s ongoing negotiations with Skydance Media regarding a potential merger. Bob Bakish has reportedly expressed reservations about the deal, which could significantly impact common shareholders. Additionally, negotiations with cable company Charter Communications for TV network carriage are underway, adding complexity to Paramount’s strategic decisions.
As discussions with Skydance Media progress, the departure of Bob Bakish underscores the shifting landscape in the media industry, where mergers and partnerships are reshaping the competitive landscape.
The special committee overseeing merger transactions and Skydance Media are actively working to finalize terms, potentially leading to significant changes in Paramount’s leadership and strategic direction in the coming days.
