President Joe Biden addressed the unrest, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order while acknowledging the significance of dissent in a democracy. President Biden rejected calls to alter his approach to the Gaza conflict and expressed opposition to deploying the National Guard on campuses.
The protests also sparked controversies, with Columbia University facing criticism for hiring a professor supportive of Hamas. Mohamed Abdou, terminated from his position as a Modern Arab Studies professor, had praised Hamas’s actions.
