Radhika Vemula, the mother of late University of Hyderabad student Rohith Vemula, held a meeting with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday, seeking justice for her son. During the meeting, Reddy assured Vemula that a fresh investigation would be conducted into her son’s suicide in 2016, promising to ensure justice for the family, as per an official release.
The meeting comes in the wake of police filing a closure report before a local court, claiming that Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit and died by suicide due to fears related to his “real caste” being exposed. In response to doubts raised by Vemula’s mother and others regarding the closure report, Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Ravi Gupta announced plans for further investigation into the case.
Gupta stated that a petition would be filed in the court, seeking permission for additional investigation. The move aims to address concerns raised over the lack of evidence cited by the police, who previously cleared accused individuals, including incumbent Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya and former BJP MLC N Ramchander Rao, of any wrongdoing in the case.
