In a significant political development, Kerala’s traditionally left-leaning political landscape is witnessing a notable transformation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making inroads into areas previously dominated by the Left and Congress. This shift follows the BJP’s historic victory in Thrissur, its first-ever Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, marking a potential change in the state’s political dynamics.
Over the past four months since securing the Thrissur seat, the BJP has been actively consolidating its position in the state, particularly in the Palakkad-Thrissur belt, which is predominantly inhabited by Christian and fishermen communities. The BJP’s success is attributed to its strategic outreach efforts and systematic engagement with local communities, including Christians, who make up about 28% of the population.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP have been working diligently to alter the state’s political landscape by establishing a foothold in these communities. Since 2015, the RSS-BJP alliance has focused on building relationships with the Christian community through regular visits to bishops, hosting colony-based shakhas, and leveraging festivals. This approach has led to the establishment of over 100 cooperative banks and has strengthened their influence among both Christian and fishermen communities along the coastal belt.
In Thrissur, a key stronghold for the BJP, there has been a visible political uptick. The party’s local offices have been renovated and rebranded, reflecting the growing prominence of the BJP in the region. The party has also formed managing committees at every block, panchayat, and booth level, intensifying its outreach and consolidation efforts.
The RSS’s influence is evident in the growth of its shakhas, particularly in areas like Guruvayur, which was previously a Muslim-majority region. The RSS has been actively working to unite the Hindu community by promoting anti-casteism and organizing festivals such as the Ramayana Fest and Sabari Fest. This focus on Hindu unity and solidarity has been a critical component of the BJP’s strategy to expand its base in Kerala.
The BJP’s efforts extend beyond electoral gains. The party’s campaign includes engaging with Christian leaders, opening dialogues with the Roman Catholic Church, and integrating Christian participation in shakhas. This approach is part of a broader strategy to foster a sense of inclusivity and counteract traditional sectarian divides.
Despite the growing political friction and occasional violence in the region, the RSS’s grassroots expansion, particularly among Scheduled Castes, has been substantial. The organization has established colony-based shakhas and strengthened its presence in rural areas, contributing to a gradual shift from a red to a saffron political landscape in Kerala.
The BJP’s rise in Kerala, particularly in Thrissur and other key constituencies, signifies a deeper strategic shift beyond mere electoral victories. It reflects a systematic effort to reshape Kerala’s sociopolitical fabric by consolidating Hindu votes and expanding influence across diverse communities.
