The recent attack by Iran-backed militants that resulted in the death of three U.S. soldiers and injured many others is increasing the pressure on President Joe Biden to take direct action against Iran. Previously, Biden has been hesitant to do so, concerned about the possibility of triggering a wider conflict.
According to experts, President Biden has a range of response options available, which may include targeting Iranian forces both within and outside Iran, or choosing a more measured retaliatory strike specifically against the Iran-backed militants responsible.
The Israel-Hamas war that began in October has seen over 150 attacks on American forces in the Middle East, carried out by Iran-backed groups in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and off the coast of Yemen.
Prior to the attack on Sunday at the remote Tower 22 outpost near Jordan’s northeastern border with Syria, previous strikes had not resulted in the deaths of U.S. troops or as many injuries. This situation provided President Biden with the opportunity to respond without the immediate risk of escalating to a direct war with Tehran, thus imposing costs on Iran-backed forces.
President Biden has announced that the United States will respond to the situation without providing further specifics. Republicans have criticized Biden, alleging that he allowed American forces to be vulnerable, waiting for a scenario where a drone or missile could bypass base defenses. They argue that such a scenario occurred on Sunday when a one-way attack drone targeted base barracks early in the morning.
As a response, they insist that Biden should take military action against Iran. Republican U.S. Senator Tom Cotton stated, “He exposed our troops as vulnerable targets. The only appropriate response to these attacks is a significant military counterstrike against Iran’s militant groups, both within Iran and throughout the Middle East.”
Representative Mike Rogers, the leading Republican on the U.S. military oversight committee in the House of Representatives, has similarly called for action against Tehran. He emphasized that it is overdue for President Biden to hold the Iranian regime and their extremist allies responsible for the attacks they have conducted. Former President Donald Trump, who is eyeing a presidential election rematch with Biden, framed the attack as a result of Biden’s perceived weakness and capitulation.
The Biden administration has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the protection of U.S. troops worldwide. However, some Democrats, such as Representative Barbara Lee, have expressed concerns about the effectiveness of Biden’s strategy in containing the Israel-Hamas conflict to Gaza. They argue that the situation is escalating into a regional conflict, putting U.S. troops at risk.
