In a significant development, the Congress party has revealed its candidates for the Raebareli and Amethi constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi, former party president, will contest from Raebareli, while Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist, will represent Congress in Amethi. The announcement follows a period of anticipation surrounding these key constituencies.
Both Raebareli and Amethi have historically been strongholds of the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi, who lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani, will now contest from Raebareli. Kishori Lal Sharma, a trusted associate of the Gandhi family, will challenge Smriti Irani in Amethi.
The nominations for both candidates are scheduled to be filed today, marking the deadline for the same. The elections in Amethi and Raebareli are slated for May 20 as part of the fifth round of the seven-phase electoral process in Uttar Pradesh.
The decision to field Rahul Gandhi and KL Sharma was made during a meeting of the Congress’ Central Election Committee. Meanwhile, the BJP has announced Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Raebareli, who previously contested against former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Expressing confidence in Sharma’s candidacy, Congress worker Yogendra Yadav emphasized his long-standing association with the Gandhi family and his extensive work in Amethi over the years. KL Sharma’s role as a key figure in managing the Amethi and Raebareli constituencies in the absence of the Gandhis has further solidified his position within the party.
Preparations are underway for Rahul Gandhi’s roadshow and nomination filing in Raebareli, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expected to accompany him. The upcoming elections in these constituencies hold significant importance for both Congress and its political rivals in Uttar Pradesh.
