The district administration in Gautam Buddh Nagar has stepped up awareness efforts around the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at expanding rooftop solar adoption and moving toward energy self-reliance. The initiative, being implemented by Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency, seeks to install solar panels on one crore households across Uttar Pradesh.
Under the scheme, eligible households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month by installing rooftop solar panels. The program is designed to significantly reduce electricity bills while promoting clean energy usage and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Subsidy and Financial Support for Consumers
The scheme offers substantial financial incentives to encourage participation. Subsidies of up to ₹45,000 are available for 1 kilowatt (kW) systems, up to ₹90,000 for 2 kW systems, and up to ₹1,08,000 for installations ranging from 3 kW to 10 kW. These incentives are jointly provided by the central and state governments to make solar adoption more affordable.
In addition to subsidies, the scheme provides access to collateral-free loans at an approximate annual interest rate of 7 percent for systems up to 3 kW capacity. This financing support ensures that households can install solar panels without facing a significant upfront financial burden.
Simple Online Application Process
Interested applicants can apply through the official portal of the scheme. The process begins with registration on the website, followed by submission of the application form. After submission, approval is obtained from the concerned electricity distribution company (DISCOM).
Once approved, applicants can proceed with the installation of solar panels. After installation, net metering and bank details must be uploaded to complete the process and start availing benefits under the scheme.
Eligibility Criteria and Required Documents
To avail benefits under the scheme, the applicant must be an Indian citizen and own a residential property with a rooftop suitable for solar installation. A valid electricity connection is mandatory, and applicants should not have previously availed benefits under any other solar subsidy scheme.
Required documents include Aadhaar card, residence proof, latest electricity bill, mobile number and bank account details such as passbook or cancelled cheque.
Opportunity for Additional Income
Apart from reducing electricity costs, the scheme also enables households to generate additional income. Consumers can supply surplus electricity generated from their rooftop solar systems back to the grid, creating an additional revenue stream.
This dual benefit of savings and income generation makes the scheme particularly attractive for residential users looking to transition to renewable energy solutions.
Local Support and Assistance
For further assistance and detailed information, residents can contact the Project Officer at UPNEDA at the office located in Vikas Bhawan, Surajpur, Greater Noida. The administration has encouraged citizens to visit the office during working days for guidance regarding application and installation procedures.
The initiative reflects a broader push toward sustainable energy solutions and aligns with national goals of increasing renewable energy capacity. By facilitating rooftop solar adoption, the scheme is expected to contribute to reduced carbon emissions and improved energy security while empowering households with affordable electricity solutions.
