Indian athletes destined for the Paris Olympics were bid farewell in a vibrant ceremony organized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the Capital on Sunday.
The athletes showcased the ceremonial and competition kit, adorned in sparkling attire, amidst assurances of national blessings and good wishes. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandavia and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri delivered encouraging addresses, emphasizing the nation’s support.
PT Usha, President of IOA, announced comprehensive medical support at the Athletes Village and a “Home away from Home” initiative by the Reliance Foundation to ensure athletes feel comfortable in Paris. Expressing confidence in the athletes’ preparedness, Usha stated, “We have no doubt you will make us proud in Paris. The entire nation stands behind you.”
Athletes including hockey players Jarmanpreet Singh and Nilakanta Sharma, shooters Shreyasi Singh and Anjum Moudgil, showcased the Tarun Tahiliani-designed ceremonial dress for the opening ceremony. The playing kit, designed by JSW Sports, was displayed by athletes like shooters Anish Bhanwala and Vijayveer Sidhu, swimmer Srihari Nataraj, and wrestler Reetika Hooda.
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri lauded the athletes’ potential to exceed expectations, drawing parallels with India’s historic sporting achievements. He highlighted the sponsorship support from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for IOA up to the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya encouraged the athletes with confidence and enthusiasm, assuring them of the nation’s support. He expressed optimism based on interactions with athletes at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
Olympic medalists including MC Mary Kom, Gagan Narang, and Karnam Malleswari were honored during the event, with Mandaviya urging for a celebratory atmosphere akin to recent national cricket victories during the Paris Olympics.
