Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a prominent right-wing Islamic leader in Pakistan, voiced his support for the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during a fiery speech in the National Assembly on Monday. Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of his faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), criticized the powerful establishment for alleged political rigging, advocating for the PTI’s right to hold rallies and potentially form a government.
Asserting the PTI’s entitlement to hold rallies, Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized the need for fair governance and questioned the integrity of recent elections. He urged the ruling coalition of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and the Pakistan Peoples Party to acknowledge the PTI’s potential majority in parliament and allow them to govern if proven.
Expressing dismay over the perceived interference of the establishment and bureaucracy in political affairs, Rehman drew a parallel between Pakistan and India, highlighting India’s aspirations for superpower status contrasted with Pakistan’s economic struggles. He criticized the secularization of Pakistan and the failure to implement Islamic principles as advised by the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII).
Additionally, Maulana Fazlur Rehman lamented Pakistan’s reliance on external financial assistance, citing the need to seek aid from the International Monetary Fund to avoid bankruptcy. Notably, Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s support for PTI, despite previous political rivalries, is seen as a strategic move to pressure the establishment and secure a stronger political position.
The JUI-F, formerly a rival of PTI, has shifted alliances, highlighting ongoing political dynamics within Pakistan’s landscape.
