In a tragic incident on Monday, nine Colombian soldiers lost their lives when their helicopter crashed in the northern Bolivar department. The region is a focal point for military operations against the Gulf Clan, one of the largest cocaine cartels in Colombia.
President Gustavo Petro confirmed that the crash occurred while the helicopter was transporting new troops for operations against the Gulf Clan. However, neither Gustavo Petro nor the military provided details about the cause of the crash or whether the cartel’s activities were involved.
The Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter went down in an area where the military is actively combating the drug trafficking operations of the Gulf Clan, which reportedly boasts around 4,000 armed members. The incident marks a significant loss for the Colombian armed forces and underscores the dangers they face in their efforts to combat organized crime in the country.
