Islamabad High Court has granted relief to ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan and ordered his release from the jail. Imran Kha is serving a three-year imprisonment in the Toshakhana corruption case. The verdict of the Sessions court was challenged in Islamabad High Court. Imran Khan was awarded three years of imprisonment on August 5, and a ban on contesting elections for the next five years. He is in Attock jail.
Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court Amir Farukh and Justice Tarik Mahmud Jahangir after hearing issued the verdict on Tuesday. The sentence given by the Sessions Court has been stayed by the High Court. The detailed verdict will be issued later by the court.
The High Court decision is considered to be a major relief for Imran Khan. He was banned from contesting elections for the next five years when the general elections are due within a few months.
Imran Khan was charged with purchasing valuable gifts at a cheaper price from the official depository called ‘Toshakhana’ and selling them at a higher price. Some of the gifts which he received as Prime Minister were not deposited in the Toshakhana..
Khan received 58 gifts worth Rs 14 crores (140 million). The gifts were purchased by paying Rs 2.14 crore and sold for Rs 5.8 crore.
