Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for targeting multiple ships in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea, escalating tensions in the region. The group stated that they launched a drone attack on the Portugal-flagged MSC Orion container ship as it sailed between ports in Sines, Portugal, and Salalah, Oman. The vessel is owned by Zodiac Maritime, partially owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.
This incident follows a series of similar attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi militants in strategic maritime routes since November. The group’s leader recently announced an expansion of their attack area to disrupt Israel-linked ships passing through the Indian Ocean toward the Cape of Good Hope.
Earlier reports also indicate that a Malta-flagged container ship was targeted by three missiles while en route from Djibouti to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The British maritime security firm Ambrey suggested that the attack was motivated by the ship’s operator’s trade relations with Israel.
The United States and Britain have responded to these attacks with retaliatory strikes against Houthi targets, underscoring the escalating tensions in the region.
