The Naxal conflict in Chhattisgarh once again turned deadly as a District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan lost his life and three others were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast allegedly triggered by Naxalites in Bijapur district on Monday. The incident highlights the continuing violence in the Maoist-affected regions of the state, where security forces are engaged in relentless anti-Naxal operations amid heightened risks and recurring casualties.

Naxal IED Blast Claims Life of DRG Jawan

According to officials, the IED blast occurred in the National Park area of Bijapur when a DRG team was conducting a search operation. The deceased jawan has been identified as Dinesh Nag, a dedicated member of the force. Three of his colleagues sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.

This tragic incident underscores the challenges faced by security forces in regions like Bijapur, which remain among the most affected by Left Wing Extremism. The Naxals, known for using guerrilla warfare tactics, frequently employ IEDs and ambush strategies to target security personnel engaged in counter-insurgency operations.

The blast comes at a time when security forces have intensified operations in several Maoist strongholds across Chhattisgarh. Just a day earlier, security teams in the neighboring Gariaband district recovered a significant cache of explosives following an encounter with Naxalites. This operation indicated the scale of preparedness among Maoist groups, who continue to stockpile arms and explosives for attacks on security personnel and infrastructure.

Recent Surrenders and Recovery of Explosives

Even as such violent incidents continue, security forces have recorded some success in pushing back Maoist influence through intensified operations and surrender drives. In a recent development, four Maoists carrying a cumulative reward of ₹19 lakh surrendered before authorities. Their surrender has not only weakened the organizational strength of the Maoists but also provided valuable intelligence that has already led to important recoveries.

Based on inputs provided by the surrendered Maoists, security personnel launched an anti-Naxal operation in a forested hill area on Gobra road. During this raid, forces discovered a significant Maoist arms dump that included four BGL rounds, a hand grenade, 15 INSAS rounds with a magazine, 15 gelatin rods, 50 detonators, an SLR rifle magazine, and ₹16.50 lakh in cash. The recovery of such a cache is seen as a major breakthrough, as it disrupts the Maoists’ ability to carry out large-scale attacks.

Among those who surrendered, Deepak alias Bhima Mandavi, a Divisional Area Committee Member (DVCM), stood out as a senior functionary with a reward of ₹8 lakh on his head. Others included Kailash alias Bhima Bhogam and Ranita alias Payki, both Area Committee Members (ACMs) of the Maoist organisation, each carrying a bounty of ₹5 lakh. The fourth, Sujita alias Karam, had a reward of ₹1 lakh. Their surrender reflects the growing pressure on Maoists from security forces as well as potential disillusionment within their ranks.

The state’s police and security forces have long maintained that surrender policies, combined with intensified on-ground operations, have played a crucial role in weakening Maoist networks. At the same time, the constant recovery of large-scale weaponry and cash suggests that the group continues to remain a formidable challenge.

Rising Concerns Over Security Force Suicides

While the battle with Maoists continues on the ground, the morale and mental health of security personnel have emerged as pressing concerns. In a separate incident reported on Saturday, a police official allegedly took his own life by hanging himself at a police station in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district. The official, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Heeraman Mandavi, was found dead in his barrack at the Dallirajhara police station. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he was declared dead by doctors.

This tragic case was not an isolated one. On August 6, another policeman allegedly died by suicide at his official residence in Durg district. Similarly, on August 3, a Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) personnel ended his life by shooting himself with his service rifle in Kondagaon district.

These back-to-back cases of suicides among police personnel have sparked concern over the mental health challenges faced by members of the security forces who operate under intense pressure. Experts and senior officials have often pointed to the psychological burden of long postings in insurgency-hit areas, constant exposure to violence, separation from families, and lack of sufficient counselling facilities.

An Escalating Conflict

The latest IED blast in Bijapur adds to the long list of violent attacks attributed to Naxal groups across Chhattisgarh. Despite multiple successes in recovery of arms and surrenders, Maoists continue to launch targeted strikes that result in casualties among security forces. For many families, the toll is personal and tragic, as in the case of jawan Dinesh Nag, who lost his life in the line of duty.

The simultaneous occurrence of increased Maoist surrenders and rising cases of stress-related suicides among security personnel paints a complex picture of the situation on the ground. While the state and central governments have pledged to continue strong counter-insurgency measures, the path toward lasting peace in Chhattisgarh’s Maoist-affected districts remains fraught with violence, sacrifices, and deep psychological strain for those at the frontline.
