  • Amit Shah reviews BJP strategy in West Bengal ahead 2026

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on December 29, 2025, beginning a three-day visit widely seen as a strategic prelude to the West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. The visit comes at a crucial moment for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is reassessing its organisational strength, electoral messaging, and ground-level preparedness in a State that has remained politically challenging for the party despite sustained national dominance.

From the moment he landed in the State capital, Mr Shah’s itinerary reflected a clear focus on consolidation and review. His engagements were centred on closed-door meetings with party leaders, legislators, and organisational functionaries, underscoring the BJP’s intent to begin its election preparations well in advance. The timing of the visit, coinciding with the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls, has added further political weight to his presence in the State.

*Organisational review and electoral strategy ahead of 2026*

Soon after arriving in Kolkata, Amit Shah proceeded to the BJP’s Salt Lake office, where a series of meetings were scheduled with the State unit’s senior leadership. These discussions are understood to have focused on evaluating the party’s performance since the last Assembly elections, identifying organisational gaps, and fine-tuning strategies aimed at expanding the BJP’s footprint across West Bengal’s diverse political landscape.

The meetings included interactions with Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly from the State, providing the central leadership with first-hand assessments of regional dynamics. Issues such as booth-level organisation, coordination between the State and central leadership, and candidate grooming are believed to have featured prominently in these deliberations. For the BJP, which has sought to position itself as the principal challenger in West Bengal, the emphasis remains on building a disciplined and unified organisational structure capable of sustaining a prolonged election campaign.

Mr Shah’s visit also assumes significance in the context of the Special Intensive Revision of the State’s electoral roll. The BJP has repeatedly argued that the exercise is essential to ensure electoral integrity, alleging the presence of unauthorised foreigners in voter lists. While the issue remains politically sensitive, the party has projected the revision as a necessary administrative step ahead of the polls. The Home Minister’s presence during this period has been interpreted by political observers as a signal of the party’s determination to keep electoral reforms and voter list accuracy at the centre of its campaign narrative.

Beyond administrative concerns, the meetings are expected to have addressed broader political messaging. The BJP’s national leadership has often stressed the importance of tailoring campaign narratives to regional aspirations, and West Bengal presents a complex socio-political environment shaped by history, culture, and strong regional identities. Aligning national themes with local concerns is likely to be a key challenge discussed during these sessions.

*Coordination with ideological affiliates and national leadership context*

Another notable aspect of Amit Shah’s three-day visit is his expected interaction with functionaries of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Such meetings, traditionally held away from public view, play a significant role in aligning organisational and ideological efforts ahead of major elections. The RSS has long been considered the BJP’s ideological mentor, and coordination between the two is often intensified in the run-up to crucial polls.

These interactions are expected to focus on strengthening grassroots networks, mobilising volunteers, and reinforcing outreach programmes across urban and rural areas of the State. For the BJP, which has sought to expand its social base in West Bengal, such coordination is viewed as essential to sustaining momentum over the long term rather than relying solely on high-profile campaigns.

Mr Shah’s visit also follows multiple trips to the State by Narendra Modi during 2025, reflecting the central leadership’s sustained attention to West Bengal. The Prime Minister’s engagements throughout the year, combined with the Home Minister’s organisational review, suggest a coordinated national effort to recalibrate the party’s approach in the State well ahead of the election year.

Political analysts note that early and frequent visits by senior leaders often indicate a recognition of both opportunity and challenge. In West Bengal, where electoral contests have historically been intense and polarised, the BJP appears keen to avoid complacency and instead invest in long-term planning. Mr Shah’s presence, therefore, is not merely symbolic but indicative of a structured attempt to assess ground realities and implement corrective measures where required.

As the three-day visit unfolds, the focus remains firmly on internal assessments rather than public rallies or major announcements. This approach highlights the party’s current emphasis on introspection and organisational strengthening. With the 2026 Assembly elections still more than a year away, the BJP’s leadership seems intent on laying a strong foundation early, using visits such as this to align strategy, organisation, and ideology in one of India’s most politically significant States.
