Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, PM Narendra Modi described the meeting as “extremely productive” and highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership. “For India, the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the UK is of immense priority. In the coming years, we are eager to work closely in areas such as technology, green energy, security, innovation, and technology. We also want to add strength to trade as well as cultural linkages,” he said. Narendra Modi also shared photos from the meeting, showcasing a warm exchange with Keir Starmer.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed the sentiment, stating that the meeting provided “fresh impetus” to bilateral ties. The MEA highlighted discussions on advancing cooperation in various sectors and acknowledged the importance of finalizing a balanced and mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations.
Narendra Modi’s engagement with Keir Starmer was part of a series of bilateral discussions during the G20 Summit. He also met leaders from countries including Italy, Indonesia, Norway, and Portugal, underlining India’s global outreach efforts. A notable meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron focused on enhancing collaboration in areas such as space exploration, energy, and artificial intelligence.
Earlier in the day, Narendra Modi briefly interacted with US President Joe Biden, though details of their conversation were not immediately disclosed. On Monday, Narendra Modi also engaged with leaders from Brazil, Singapore, and Spain, reinforcing India’s commitment to multilateral cooperation.
The G20 Summit marks a continuation of Narendra Modi’s diplomatic tour, which included a two-day visit to Nigeria before his arrival in Rio de Janeiro.
