An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon resulted in the death of a senior Hezbollah commander, as confirmed by the Iran-backed militant group on Tuesday.
Identified as Sami Abdallah, also known as Abu Taleb, born in 1969, the commander’s death was announced by Hezbollah with “great pride and great honour.”
According to a Lebanese military source, this commander held significant importance within Hezbollah and is considered the most senior member of the group to be killed since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The strike occurred in the town of Jouaiyya, approximately 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the Israeli border, and resulted in the deaths of three other individuals.
Recent days have seen an escalation in exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the border.
The clashes in the border region have led to casualties, with at least 458 people reported dead in Lebanon, according to an AFP count. Israeli authorities have confirmed the deaths of at least 15 soldiers in the fighting.
Additionally, tens of thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the violence.
