In a groundbreaking development, US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced a significant partnership to establish a semiconductor fabrication plant in India, marking a pivotal moment in India-US relations. This facility will focus on advanced sensing, communication, and power electronics, aimed at enhancing national security, next-generation telecommunications, and green energy applications. The plant, referred to as a “fab,” will specialize in manufacturing infrared, gallium nitride, and silicon carbide semiconductors, integral for various technological advancements.
This initiative, made possible through support from the India Semiconductor Mission, represents a strategic technology partnership involving Indian firms Bharat Semi and 3rdiTech, alongside the US Space Force. This collaboration is historic, as it marks the first time the US military has engaged in a technology partnership of this nature with India, signifying a relationship as impactful as the civil nuclear deal between the two nations.
The new fabrication plant is not only India’s first but also ranks among the world’s first multi-material fabs dedicated to national security. Named “Shakti,” the Bharat Semi fab aims to address critical needs within modern warfare, focusing on three essential pillars: advanced sensing, advanced communications, and high-voltage power electronics. These areas are vital for various commercial sectors, including railways, telecom infrastructure, data centers, and green energy initiatives.
The technology being developed at this fab falls under the category of “compound semiconductors,” which play a crucial role in the future of electronics. PM Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India from a chip-taker to a chip-maker is being realized through this endeavor, positioning India as a significant player in global semiconductor manufacturing.
With an annual import bill of $1 billion for semiconductors related to national security, this project aims to reduce dependence on foreign technology and bolster India’s self-reliance in this critical sector. The collaboration underscores the commitment of both nations to enhance their technological capabilities, with multiple cooperation deals already in place focused on semiconductors and other critical technologies.
This initiative is viewed as a major advancement in tech diplomacy, enabling India to join an elite group of nations capable of producing these advanced semiconductors domestically. The establishment of the fab is not just a technical achievement; it is expected to have far-reaching implications for India’s position as a net security provider in the region.
The success of Bharat Semi and 3rdiTech exemplifies PM Narendra Modi’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision and the accomplishments stemming from the iCET (Indo-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies) launched earlier this year. As these Indian firms emerge as national champions in the semiconductor sector, this initiative heralds a new era of technological collaboration between India and the United States, promising to shape the future of semiconductor production and national security in the region.
