The fragile situation in Gaza saw a glimmer of relief as a U.S.-backed humanitarian foundation commenced aid distribution on Monday, delivering essential food supplies to civilians amidst a harsh and ongoing Israeli military offensive. This development comes as Gaza faces severe shortages of food and basic necessities due to a long-standing blockade and relentless airstrikes that have devastated the region. Despite the initial hesitation and international criticism, aid efforts are starting to reach the population, though the violence continues unabated, with deadly air raids killing dozens, including civilians sheltering in schools.
Aid Delivery Amidst Violence
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, supported by the United States and endorsed by Israel, began distributing food supplies to designated centers after reports indicated no aid had reached civilians earlier in the day. The foundation announced plans to increase the flow of aid with more truck deliveries in the coming days. This initiative is critical as Gaza’s population of two million faces extreme food shortages following nearly three months of blockade. However, the United Nations has criticized the private foundation’s aid plans as insufficient to meet the scale of the crisis.
The foundation recently faced internal turmoil when its executive director, Jake Wood, resigned, citing difficulties in adhering to humanitarian principles amid the complex and politically charged environment. John Acree, a senior humanitarian expert, has been appointed as the interim director, tasked with overseeing aid distribution operations. The foundation will operate through four main distribution centers in southern Gaza, where families are screened for any connections to Hamas militants—a process that has raised concerns and condemnation from Hamas, which accuses Israel of using aid as a tool for control.
Escalating Conflict and Civilian Toll
While aid distribution begins, the conflict’s toll remains grim. Israeli airstrikes on Monday killed at least 45 people, including 30 Palestinians sheltering in a school in Gaza City. Israeli military sources claim the school was used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants for planning attacks, though no evidence has been publicly provided. Survivors describe the dire conditions, emphasizing the lack of safety anywhere in Gaza, including schools and hospitals.
The ongoing military campaign intensified after Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israeli communities, which killed over 1,200 Israelis and led to the abduction of 251 hostages. Since then, Israel has escalated its operations with the stated goal of dismantling Hamas’s military and governance capabilities. The offensive has devastated Gaza, displacing nearly all residents and resulting in over 53,000 deaths, many of whom are civilians, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
International concern is mounting, with countries like Sweden summoning Israel’s ambassador to discuss the humanitarian crisis. Despite attempts to allow limited aid into Gaza, the scale of assistance remains insufficient to meet the needs of the population caught in one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies.
