As Israeli airstrikes continue to pound Gaza, the death toll has surged with at least 55 Palestinians killed in a single day, drawing increasing global condemnation and calls for an immediate ceasefire. The intensifying bombardment, now in its 20th month, has left the densely populated enclave devastated, compounded by a deepening humanitarian crisis and growing diplomatic backlash against Israel.
Mounting Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage
Tuesday’s attacks included airstrikes on homes and a school sheltering displaced families, killing 18 people including children. Gaza medics reported over 500 deaths in just the past nine days. In Gaza City’s Daraj neighborhood, survivors searched through the rubble of a school, mourning the dead and lamenting the repeated targeting of civilian spaces. The Al-Ahli Hospital witnessed emotional funeral rites, with mourners questioning the targeting of innocents. Israel has maintained that Hamas militants use civilian buildings as cover, a claim Hamas denies.
In southern Gaza, the Israeli army had issued evacuation warnings for Khan Younis, signaling an “unprecedented attack.” Meanwhile, indirect ceasefire negotiations in Qatar faltered, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recalling his negotiating team and Hamas accusing Israel of negotiating in bad faith.
International Pressure and Humanitarian Crisis
The global response has been increasingly critical. Britain suspended trade talks with Israel and summoned its ambassador, citing egregious policies in Gaza and the West Bank. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for a review of the EU-Israel trade deal, while the U.N. reported that despite Israel easing its 11-week blockade, aid distribution remains stalled.
Only 93 aid trucks entered Gaza via Kerem Shalom after security checks. U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said limited supplies like baby food and medicine have reached Gaza, but added that aid warehouses are running empty. Louise Wateridge of UNRWA echoed the alarm, reporting severe shortages in food and essentials.
As international calls for a ceasefire intensify, the humanitarian situation worsens. Israel’s campaign, initiated after Hamas-led attacks in October 2023, has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents and killed over 53,000 people, according to Gaza health officials. The hunger crisis has deepened since Israel’s blockade from March, with the U.N. estimating at least 500 aid trucks are needed daily to address the crisis.
Despite the mounting death toll and growing diplomatic fallout, Israel maintains its resolve to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of remaining hostages through military action.
