Aid efforts in Gaza faced a major setback as distribution was paused due to unsafe overcrowding, compounding the hardships faced by residents during Eid al-Adha. While the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), backed by the US and Israel, tried to provide relief amid severe food shortages, ongoing violence and operational challenges disrupted the process. The fragile humanitarian situation worsened as Israeli strikes killed Palestinians and clashes continued, making access to aid increasingly difficult.
Overcrowding and Aid Distribution Challenges
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation initially announced the closure of its distribution centers in southern Gaza due to dangerous crowding, then reported partial food delivery before confirming a full pause to ensure safety. The foundation stated that although some distributions were peaceful, the overwhelming crowds made it unsafe to continue. Gaza’s ongoing food crisis, worsened by an 11-week blockade, has left millions facing starvation. However, chaotic management and limited supplies have resulted in disorder and frustration among Palestinians trying to obtain aid.
Reports indicate that GHF opened three aid hubs but only two have been operational recently. Many residents must travel long distances before dawn to reach these centers within restricted hours set by the Israeli military, which warns that areas outside designated times are military zones posing serious risks. Palestinians describe the process as disorganized, with long queues and insufficient resources.
Violence and Security Concerns Amid Eid
The humanitarian crisis unfolded against the backdrop of intensified conflict. Israeli airstrikes killed 16 Palestinians, mostly in northern Gaza, while an explosion in Khan Younis killed four Israeli soldiers and wounded five. The Israeli military issued new evacuation orders near Gaza City amid ongoing operations targeting Hamas militants.
Eid prayers were held near damaged mosques and homes, illustrating the hardships endured by civilians. Despite the holiday, violence persisted with clashes and casualties reported near aid distribution points. Witnesses blame Israeli forces for the killings, while the Israeli military says it fired warning shots at Palestinians approaching military positions.
The United Nations warns that Gaza’s population faces a famine crisis, with acute malnutrition rates among children rising sharply. The GHF’s efforts to provide relief face criticism from humanitarian organizations over neutrality and operational effectiveness, highlighting the complex challenges of delivering aid in a conflict zone marked by political tension, security threats, and logistical difficulties.
