Allegations of illegal kidney smuggling in hospitals linked to ruling DMK leaders have set off a political firestorm in Tamil Nadu, with Opposition Leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami accusing the DMK of shielding those involved in organ trafficking while the state government initiates a crackdown following a preliminary probe.
Palaniswami, addressing the media, claimed that illegal kidney trade was operating out of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Hospital in Perambalur and Sithar Hospital in Trichy, both allegedly linked to Manachanallur DMK MLA Kathiravan. He stated that the issue was so severe that even the DMK government could not deny it in their official communications, referencing a government statement acknowledging kidney smuggling in hospitals connected to DMK members. “You trusted and voted for them, and now body parts are being taken away. This is not just our claim; the government’s own documents confirm these horrifying acts,” Palaniswami said, using the issue to criticise the ruling party’s governance and accountability.
Government Suspends Licenses Following Inquiry
In response to the allegations, the Tamil Nadu government has suspended the kidney transplant licenses of the two hospitals under scrutiny. This action followed a preliminary inquiry conducted by an IAS officer, indicating that the state acknowledged the seriousness of the claims, even as the political blame game between the AIADMK and DMK intensified.
AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan further amplified the allegations, claiming the existence of a well-organised organ trafficking network linked to DMK leaders, accusing them of exploiting the poor by stealing kidneys under the guise of treatment. He criticised the Health Ministry, alleging it was using its powers to avoid a thorough investigation while the alleged culprits remained unaccountable.
The issue has triggered widespread debate in Tamil Nadu, highlighting concerns around hospital accountability, the need for stronger oversight in organ transplant practices, and the political challenges surrounding corruption allegations within the healthcare system. The developments have put pressure on the DMK government to ensure transparency in its investigations while facing sharp attacks from the opposition amid growing public scrutiny.
