In a strong appeal seeking justice for a woman lawyer allegedly gang-raped in Kolkata, Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput has urged Chief Justice of India BR Gavai to take suo moto cognisance and direct a Supreme Court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. The request highlights concerns over the safety of the victim, alleged institutional failures, and the need for accountability among political leaders and the state government.
Call for CBI Investigation and Action Against TMC Leaders
In a detailed letter to the Chief Justice, Satyam Singh Rajput has demanded the immediate transfer of the case to the CBI under a time-bound investigation monitored directly by the Supreme Court. He has also sought action against Trinamool Congress leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra, accusing them of making derogatory remarks and victim-shaming statements that could intimidate the survivor and undermine the legal process. Satyam Singh Rajput emphasised that political interference and insensitive comments have contributed to a hostile environment for the victim and other women seeking justice in such cases.
The plea also requests protection for the survivor, her family, legal representatives, witnesses, and activists associated with the case to ensure that the investigation and legal proceedings can continue without threats, harassment, or coercion.
Safety Measures and Compensation Demands
In addition to the investigation, Satyam Singh Rajput has urged the West Bengal government to adopt strict safety measures in educational institutions across the state. These include mandatory 24/7 CCTV surveillance, dedicated women’s safety cells, regular security audits, emergency response systems, background verification of staff, and regular safety awareness programs. He argued that these steps are critical to creating a safer environment for women and reducing the risk of such crimes in the future.
The advocate has also demanded interim compensation of Rs 50 lakh from the state government for the victim to cover medical treatment, legal expenses, and rehabilitation while the final compensation is determined. Further, he has called for a magisterial inquiry into the institutional failures that allowed the crime to occur and disciplinary action against any officials found negligent in their duties.
Satyam Singh Rajput’s letter underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure accountability and protect the rights and dignity of women, particularly in cases involving violence and sexual assault. His call for a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe aims to ensure transparency, speed, and fairness in the investigation while addressing concerns about political influence and institutional lapses in the handling of the case.
