Former Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar, Jitendra Narayan, has gotten relief in the case of rape. The Supreme Court has upheld his bail granted by the Port Blair Bench of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Vikramnath dismissed the petition of the victim and the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and directed the trial court to conduct the hearing expeditiously.
During the hearing, the counsel for the victim woman said that the CCTV footage of the incident had also disappeared. On behalf of the Andaman and Nicobar administrations, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that along with this, evidence of tampering with the evidence has also been found.
In fact, the Andaman government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court to cancel the anticipatory bail granted to former Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Jitendra Narayan and former Labour Commissioner on charges of gangrape and sexual exploitation. A woman from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has alleged that she was taken to the residence of the then Chief Secretary on the promise of a government job and then raped by high officials, including Jitendra Narayan.
The victim had also accused Labour Commissioner RL Rishi, a police inspector, and a hotel owner of rape, following which an SIT was constituted. The principal secretary was suspended with immediate effect on October 17, 2022, after it came to the notice of the union Home Ministry.
