In a tragic turn of events, 25-year-old state-level tennis player Radhika Yadav was allegedly shot dead by her own father while she was preparing a meal in the kitchen of their family home in Gurgaon. The young athlete, who was trying to build a future for herself and other aspiring players through her own tennis academy, was gunned down reportedly over an ongoing dispute with her father about her career choices and the family’s social standing.

According to Gurgaon police, Radhika’s father, Deepak Yadav, 51, was upset over societal taunts and criticism that he was dependent on his daughter’s income from her flourishing tennis academy. The incident took place around 10:30 am on Thursday in Block-G of Sushant Lok II, a quiet neighbourhood that was shaken by the sudden violence in a well-known local family.

Rising Athlete, Shattered Dreams

Radhika Yadav’s story was one of dedication and promise. A graduate of the reputed Scottish High International School, she had completed her Class 12 in commerce back in 2018 and pursued tennis passionately from an early age. She steadily climbed the ranks in state-level tennis circuits and held a doubles ranking of 113 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF). At her peak, she was counted among the top 200 players in ITF doubles globally.

Despite suffering a recent shoulder injury, Radhika did not let it deter her ambitions. She continued to manage her tennis academy, nurturing young players and inspiring many to take up the sport. Her determination and independent spirit, however, reportedly became a source of deep resentment for her father.

Police officials revealed that Deepak Yadav faced repeated taunts from villagers and acquaintances in their native Wazirabad. Many mocked him for surviving on his daughter’s earnings. This perceived blow to his ‘honour’ and the constant social pressure allegedly pushed him into depression and rage. Investigators say that the family had frequent arguments over Radhika’s decision to run the academy against her father’s wishes.

A Dispute Over Pride and Social Image

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sadar) Yashwant Yadav stated that Deepak had often asked Radhika to close her academy but she remained firm in her resolve. Frustration boiled over when she posted a video on social media which her father disapproved of, sources close to the investigation shared. This incident may have reignited tensions that eventually turned fatal.

On the day of the murder, as Radhika was cooking breakfast, her father allegedly shot her three times in the back with his licensed revolver. The bullets struck her vital organs, killing her instantly. Neighbours reported hearing gunshots and screams, and soon the local police arrived at the scene. Deepak Yadav was arrested on the spot, and his revolver was seized by the police.

In his initial confession, Deepak claimed that he had been battling depression for over two weeks, tormented by neighbours’ comments questioning his masculinity and self-worth due to his daughter’s independent income. According to the first information report (FIR) accessed by local media, he confessed that he could not bear the ‘insults’ any longer and acted in a fit of rage.

Investigators are still probing whether other factors may have contributed to the shocking murder, including financial disputes, possible family tensions, or Radhika’s increasing public presence through social media. The police are also examining her recent posts and any heated exchanges between father and daughter that could have triggered the final argument.

The sudden death of Radhika Yadav has left the local sports community in disbelief. Friends and fellow players remember her as a determined athlete who dreamt of putting Gurgaon on the map for tennis. Her academy was not just a source of livelihood but also a beacon of opportunity for many young children, especially girls, to pursue the sport at a competitive level.

As the investigation continues, Radhika’s murder has sparked a conversation about societal pressures, the burden of ‘family honour,’ and the devastating consequences they can have on young women trying to carve their own path. Her death is a grim reminder of how ambitions and family pride can collide with tragic consequences.
